I had the first chance to get out for a hunt other then the parks I have been playing in since I got my AT Pro 2 weeks ago. Someone I have been hunting with a couple times called me and said he received permission to hunt some private property. He went last weekend and found 2 large cents and a 1723 Hibernia Copper and wanted to know if I wanted to back there with him today. We only spent an 1.5h hunting but I got my first Wheat and the piece below. We got back to his place and compared the piece to the Hibernia he found last week and it was identical in size (15/16" diameter) and shape, but his was legible. I almost went blind trying to find something on it....lol. While researching it I came across a piece of information about a "penny button". You can see on the photo, one side has a mark on it that appears something could be missing.
So....If a button....did they use colonial copper back then to make buttons? It seems to me, back then, that would be an expenseive button. Also, Is it possible to have a coin in the ground for over 250 years and loose it's marking's?
Thanks
Denis
