Need honest opinions on the Tesoro Silver U-Max

Prospector

New member
Looking for a grab and go unit to coin and jewlery hunt at parks and fresh water beaches. I am trying to decide between a Whites Prizm II and a Tesoro Silver U-max. Anyone who has used both please tell me which you think is the deeper of the two in your opinion, and the best for what I have described.

All my Tesoros have a noticeably faster response/retune which makes for better pinpointing than the Prizm I traded. The Tesoros have a better coil selection as well. Depth pretty much comparable. Tesoro a bit lighter and only use 1 9volt battery versus 2. Lifetime warranty. Silver is the better choice all around in my opinion.

don't waiste your time with the whites, my silver picked up qauters my m6 left behind and thats no joke and ever since then i've never looked at another white's again, i just think there overated and over priced!

The Silver uMax is a better detector, I been at this hobby 25 plus years and have used alot of different brands and models and I can tell in to I am blue in the face how good the Silver uMax is but you have to use one yourself to see how good they really are. Besides being a great detector they are also alot of fun to use. I have found many rings and alot of different jewelry with the Silver uMax. Steve.

Three seasons ago I had both a Prizm lll and a Tesoro Silver Umax. The Prizm is limited with coils, more selection with the Silver. The Prizm can notch discrimination the Silver can't.As you know the Prizm has a ID screen and a depth meter. The Prizm lll has a comparable price to the Silver going to the lV, V and Vl is going to bring the cost a lot more than the Silver.I used the Prizm lll,Ace 250 and Silver UMax.I liked the Silver better depth ,balance and fun.Hope this helps.

I used a friend's whites and liked it in some ways. I bought a Silver umax and thought I'd made a mistake because I was diggin' pulltabs 6" deep and all my life I'd lived by notch and ID detectors. Then, I started finding rings, reading posts, listening to the detector, and it just grew on me-I don't know how to explain the sounds and subleties of this detector, but it just causes you to fall in love with it. Coins are smooth and trash is "rough sounding"-unless it's being partially masked. You can check signals against each other in a/m mode and disc. Find a spot on your disc dial where tabs just start to break up-mark it carefully. Then hunt in foil and when you get a signal, simply rotate the dial to this marked spot and:(1. if the signal goes silent-nickel range,(2. if the signal breaks up-tab range, and (3. if it stays-coin range. Just making one move you have a notch detector. Or if you're after gold AND coins, just use low discriminate and "learn the language" and be sure and listen for those weak ,smooth signals. Raising the coil as you check the signals gives additional info. No pinpoint, but the thing's so fast you don't need it-I drop my screwdriver right on the coin most of the time and I have done it so much I can usually pinpoint on the second sweep-still in motion. Just gotta go deep? Get the 10X12" coil and hunt with the big boys. The 5.75" coil is a coin killer, and some say it's almost as deep as the standard coil-and if pinpointing was easy with the 8" coil, you can imagine what it's like with the smaller coil. Like to hunt football or soccer fields but would like to do it before the sun goes down? There's the 18" clean sweep coil that covers TONS of ground at the 4-6" level. And it will pick up the teeniest targets, according to where the discrimination is set. If Tesoro put a two-tone ID on the machine where the tones would split at tabs-I'd probably never use my other detectors. :ninja:

Being in the Tesoro section, you know the Tesoro is going to get rave review/opinions.
It's just a sweet little machine for the money.
No display screen - there is an advantage - makes ya hunt by audio, and not let a screen decide what to dig or not.

Forget the prizim, it only comes whith the 9" concentric landfill coil , landfill because thats whear it belongs , you will not be able to navigate in high trash the silver is much more versital on its coil selection for that reason alone i would get the silver , now the silver will get you down 4--5" on coins whith good signals and its easey to judge the depth by the strength of the beep its a good machine indeed and the light wheght to . i think of the whites machines as now obsolete for the price you can get a lighter x-terra 50 that can do all the whites do and weghs less does as much or better or a fisher F-5 look at the prizem 3 you could get a vaquero for thatprice whites has to get thear head out of the sand

The Silver U Max may be the most under rated detector on the market. Several of the items I have found were so small that a top of the line other make ,can't pick them up on the ground...There are a lot of good detectors out there. It's that the Silver, for what you want it for, is hard to beat. Cordially Nad

If you just have to have a display, get tha Whites.

But tha Silver is way better.

I don't know tha Prizm well.

But I do know it's slow.

It just doesn't seem like a good match.

Tha Silver is fun.

I like tha Garrett 250 more than tha Prizm II.

But I like tha Silver better than both of um.

Take into account I have five MD's, all Tesoro'es.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Got both /go with the silver u / it does not miss if it is there you will find it! No meter is a plus in most situations (99%) for me at least! It is easy to discrim out trash and you have choices of coils ( no so with the white) Oh and the silver is deeper detector in my hands at least / hope that helps good luck! gottit!!

I have not tried that whites yo mentioned.

Simply put, the Silver just kinda does what it is supposed to do.
I bought a Little Yeller Feller when they first came out... Made sure to swap it off quickly while it was still new and shiny.
Response and recovery time was far slower than my Tesoro machines.
The BONG was annoying.
Don't need a screen.
The notch was fun, if all you wanted was quarters.

I use my Silver with a CS 3 x 18 coil. Works great!

I'd like to try a whites mxt or dfx one day.
But they are very expensive.

Best

Gotta add my 2 cents. The Silver uMax is the BEST machine Tesoro offers, and it happens to be one of the least expensive. We all have varying opinions, of course. But I know my Silver well enough to say that it may as well have an "invisible" meter. The noises are soon learned so you don't need a meter. Sure, I'm a little "biased".

You got it right! Trash has the little "clipped" sounds and good targets come in either soft and smooth or hard and strong.
