Hi Guys/Gals: I presently own an X-Terra 50 that I have been using for coins and rings. I like this unit, and have had good success with it. My question is this. I have access to an old home site that could possibly contain some gold coin caches. I am thinking of adding a second detector that would be useful in locating single and mult-coin deposits. I know that this is a Minelab forum, but I have read the post long enough to feel like you guys will give me good information regardless of detector preference. I have been looking at a Garrett 1500 that has target imagining and also the White's MXT. The Garrett in particular sparks my interest due to the target sizing feature it has. Does any of you have any experience with these units so you can give me an honest assessment of target depth on gold and silver coins. The X-terrra 50 may be adequate as far as depth goes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If these are large deep items then a two box detector is what is commonly used. Looks like a box on each end of a broom stick that you walk along and carry by your side.

First of all, I've owned the Garrett 1500 and still have an MXT. They are both good detectors. But frankly, I wouldn't chose either for the application you describe. If you are looking for gold caches, there are lots of unknowns. What type of container is it buried in? Iron, tin, an old crock or a fruit jar with a zinc lid? And, how large of cache (size wise) is it? Bigger than a breadbox or a dozen or so coins? If you can't answer either of these questions, neither target imaging nor VDI are going to help out alot. My weapon of choice for cache hunting old farm sites is the Minelab Advantage. I've owned at least one since they came out and will NEVER be without one. It is fast, deep, sensitive and accurate. It has manual GB and adjustable discrimination. It comes with a ten inch DD coil as well as an eight inch DD coil. In addition, you can purchase a variety of aftermarket coils for specific applications. I like the Excellerator 5-inch for hunting trashy areas. It separates well and has remarkable depth for a small coil. The 15-inch WOT has amazing depth. On my last cache hunt at an old farmsite, I pulled out fist sized pieces of iron at depths of over 24 inches. No gold yet. But I ain't done either!!! HH Randy

I've read about the two-box detectors but have never used one...but that would seem like some good advice.
