Hi Rich...I had an XLT for quite awhile but finally sold it and got an Explorer. There are good and bad points to both. The things I liked better on the XLT than the explorer are 1) the lighter weight 2) the clearer tones with different objects 3) the id was easier with the XLT...it would tell you penny dime ring nickle tab etc. and was most often right 4) it had a higher numbering system for targets...0-95 5) I loved the ease of the trigger switch for the pinpoint mode 6) it was made of metal etc. etc. I miss those things and I don't think any detector has it all BUT the major reason for switching to the Explorer was 1) salt water doesn't affect much if any (with the xlt you have to turn down the sensitivity quite a bit in salt water and/or black sand and it will affect the depth) 2) the depth is better with the Explorer 3) the Explorer responds to the target to give you more info: conductivity AND amount of iron present in the target (ferrous content) 4) I like the design as far as the battery pack etc. I can't think of anything else right now but the main thing a person would want from a detector I would think is to go as deep as possible and also be able to control how mineralization etc. affects it in the process and the Explorer gets an A+ for these things in my opinion. -Dave
