Need Help

We received our first metal detector on Monday it is a Garrest Ace 250, we set it up, powered it up and it beeped, it worked for a while then we could not get a reading, we switched it off and tried again later and again it worked for a while and then stopped. I am sure it is something we are doing wrong but as this is our very first time not sure.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Thank you
Denise

When you say it stopped, do you mean it shut off or were you just not getting any belltones if you swung it over a coin? What mode were you in(coins, jewelry, etc)? Where is your Sensitivity set? Set in on 4 bars or 50%. Try a factory reset. Shut it off and wait a few seconds and the press the power button and hold it down until it comes on(about 10 sec.s, I think). Are you using headphones? Make sure they are plugged in good. Make sure your coil cable is screwed on good.
After all that, let us know how it is working and give good precise details of what it is doing.

Maybe one of the batteries went bad or lost it's connection. It may need to be returned to Garrett.
Good luck.

Checked batteries, tried factory reset. This is what happens, turn it on and it initially works, we put coins down on the ground and it read exactly what they were, then without changing anything it stopped picking up, no tones nothing. That was the first time, second time my son and his dad took it out to a field, it worked in all metals and then suddenly stopped again. I myself think it is something they are doing wrong <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">
Today it switches, powers up with a beep but then does not detect anything.
Thank you so much. My son is absolutely a beginner having never handled a metal detector before, maybe we were a little to ambitious getting this but now we have it so must work it out.

Doesn't sound like it's anything you are doing wrong.
You might want to e-mail Mary Penson at Garrett and see what she has to say. She's a great lady that will help any way she can. Here's her e-mail:

Thank you, actually I called her today and left a message on her voice mail. I will try the email though. My son is disappointed he saved hard for this and now can not use it. I was hoping to get it sorted without sending it back but it looks as if that is what we will have to do.
Again thank you.

Tell your son to hang in there. For the money it's a
good detector. Things occasionally break down. Shoot,
I even have to go in for repair myself, occasionally.

My buddys new 250 acted about like that,it was the coil,I have heard of a few coils that were bad.

Thank you everyone, Mary from Garretts just called me and I am sending it back, hopefully we will be back with photos of all our big finds!!

You'll be very happy you got it once the problem is solved.
