Need HELP with X-Terra 70 in Southern California

Woppy

New member
I am new to metal detecting. I live in Orange County Ca. I bought an X-Terra 70 about 3 weeks ago and have gone to the Huntington Beach a couple of times and to some local parks a couple of times plus I dug a few holes in the backyard my wife doesn't know about. I have the 5"x10" 18.75 kHz as well as the stock coil. I have mainly been using the 18.75 KHz with very little success though I am good at finding pennies. I was wondering if anyone lives close that I might be able to meet up with me and show me the ropes with my new detector. I have been reading a lot of the post and practicing in the back yard with different targets. I just think I am a better visual learner. I hope someone can help or it is going to be a long learner curve I can tell already.

Welcome to the site and congrats on the 70!

Make sure to check out the FAQFAQ at the top of the forum. It is full of grat info that will help you very much. Good luck to you, Beale.

Mike,

Unfortunately I don't live near you but the X-70 is a powerful machine that is relatively simple to use. As Beale pointed out, the FAQ's are a great source of info. Personally I would recommend that you start off with the stock coil whether you are inland or at the beach. The HF coils are very sensitive & you will hit a lot of low conductive trash with them. The MF is a better coil to start with. Inland use the coins pattern; at the beach use the beach setting. You should do just fine.

If you run into more trouble I may be at Santa Monica this weekend if you are up that way.

Bill,

I appreciate the help, I will switch back to the MF Coil and see how that works. If you are going to go to Santa Monica let me know. If i can make it i would like to come by, I want to learn all i can so i can get better at using my detector. I had problems with the TID jumping all over the place and the target depth meter showing very deep targets. I didn't dig anything like that because i thought it would be trash. After reading some of the post on this forum i think i might have made a mistake.

Thanks again,

Mike

Once you put in a little bit more time I feel you will realize the X-70 is a good machine and pretty straight forward. Also, don't hold back on any questions you have come up. Good Luck and welcome.

xwyokid,

Thanks, I am trying to put in as much time as I can. I know it will take time to learn. Thanks again.

Often, for me. a very jumpy TID has been a piece of foil, or a rusty nail. I'm still a newb though.

Ask lots of Questions and make uneducated assumptions then these guys will straighten you out! It's working for me.

Turnmaster,

I have run into a lot of foil on the beach. I just hate when the TID #'s are all over the place and the depth meter is fully pegged. I never dig those because I think it will be a waste of time. That is why I was hoping there was someone with an X70 close to me so I can get some help.

If you are a visual learner there are a couple video links in the FAQ at the top of the page. There are also all sorts of videos on YouTube. Also look to see if there are any Metal Detecting clubs in your area.

If you are new to metal detecting then what you may be experiencing is the shock at the amount of trash that is in the ground. And that's not a specious statement! The coil you are using was specifically designed for Prospecting & Gold Jewelry hunting as it's secondary purpose. But it is also a good general purpose coil for coin & relic hunting. Because it was designed to find small gold it will find small aluminum which reacts like gold. It will also find nickels & ring+square aluminum tabs like crazy. It's like having a Wolverine as a pet, the Wolverine doesn't know it's a pet and is going to keep acting like a Wolverine.

People many times on forums only post the good stuff they find, they don't show you the amount of trash they had to dig to get the goodies. The best you can hope to do is improve your percentages over time with experience. There is no magic trick that someone is going to show you if you are searching for small gold jewelry. A ratio of 1 gold piece to every 100 aluminum pieces would be very good! More than likely it will average 1 in 500 to 1000 depending on many factors.

Bill,

I have watched a lot of the videos and i found them to be very informative. I was looking for some specific help with Southern California beaches not magic tricks. Though if someone new a magic trick for finding small gold jewelry I hope they would share it with all of us. I wanted someone with more than the 3 weeks experience I have, to see if I was setting the controls correctly, and any helpful hints on the best way so search local beaches. I know it is going to take time and practice. I have been using your ideas on practicing on different targets with different setups on the machine to see how the detector reacts. Thanks for all the info.
