Need help with this one

Hello Allen,

a couple pics and a couple questions...

Does the dimple look like this?

Another pic of 2 Pounder cannonballs from the same link.

These are described as appr. 2 pounds, 2-1/2" diameter.

Something odd here, as from a number of other sources on cannons I see that 2 Pounders (earlierly called Falcons) had a bore of 2-1/2" and a ball that was 2-1/4". As well, this guy seems to have an unending supply of cannonballs.

A consideration. The finish on the ball in your pic looks far too smooth and unpitted than you'd expect on a ball that has been in the ground for a 150 years. My guess would be that it is possibly the type of ball that is used in a Ball Mill for crushing/pulverizing material in the production of cement etc. Link below to chrome steel balls used for "grinding media" in ball mills. The supplier below has steel balls in sizes up to 4-1/2"

Hello Gabe,
I did a more precise measurement on the ball.I didn't dig it.I found it in an old storage shed,so I don't know how long it was in the ground or maybe it wasn't,It does have some pitting on the side opposite the dimple. Thanks for your trouble in finding the info.
Allen
