Need Help With Problems Running In - Manual Sens,

E-Trac-Ohio

Well-known member
I know that many of you run with your Manual Sens. turned up very high - or even all the way up for additional depth.
I run in Auto + 3 Sens. almost all the time.
The reason for this is that every time I switch over to Manual Sens. - I get a very unstable - totally out of control - bouncing target ID - I mean the target ID is really all over the place !
Even when I turn the Manual Sens. down to 22 or 24 I still get a horrible target ID bounce !
This bounce happens to me every time - at every site - as soon I switch over to Manual Sens.

I'm not talking about additional noise - I'm use to a lot of noise - I've been running with just about a wide open screen - in 2 Tone Ferrous at most sites for a few years now.
I've checked - it's not a bad coil - I get the same results with all three of my coils.

Has anyone else had this problem?
I'd really to like to be able to get some additional depth at some of the older sites I hunt .
What settings would you suggest I use to help make the machine run more stable in Manual Sens. ???

Thanks for your replies in advance ! --- Mark

You have nothing wrong, there is only a few sites around my area where I can run manual. A couple real clean ballfields and another area in a small park. Most places I try manual I cannot get it above 24 and it chirps and bounces like crazy, almost impossible to use high manual at old farm houses, especially with the stock coil.

Your not missing much depth if your using auto +3 I get get plenty of depth.

Mark, I agree with Terry! What both of you are seeing is what I myself have been seeing here. I've tried running "hot" at times and I'm getting those bounces and faint sounds, then when I get a consistent one I could never find nor want to keep digging deeper. I used in on a park where I'd dug my deepest coin, an IH at the foot mark. That was in Auto +3 and the sound came in great and consistent. So its Auto +3 for me in most spots.

i dont know all the ins and outs of the etrac, but i have fallen into the habit of using manual all the time. i keep it at 24 and bump it up if im in a "quiet" area. i can say that i have fast and deep both set to "off". maybe that will help you. i always run in multi tone conductive sounds, discriminating out all FE 28-35.

its not a "quiet" way to run an etrac, but its mentally manageable. not "out of control" like stated in the first post. i seek repeatability.

Very few areas I hunt will allow me to run really hot in manual. I have the same issues. Auto +3 is doing better for me most places.

I would stay in auto +3 it is the smoothest setting in my area. I tried manual a couple times and like you I found the I.D. and machine itself to unstable.

I agree with the others but you should be able to run in manual maybe just not wide open. Why not try a factory reset to see if that may help. I have had problems like you describe but not as often. I'm sure you have tried manual noise cancel if not that may help. Hope you get it figured out. Let us know if you solve the problem. Good luck and HH :minelab:

are these extremely bouncy signals that you get at 24 actually good targets? are they deep? or does the machine generally just go nuts? i notice that the machine (at 24) does go nutty when in a trashy area but out in a "clean" area your machine should be very stable at 24. even in a trashy area though, ACTUAL coins will still give relatively stable readings. down to about 5" for me before they really start to get jumpy.

I run in manual 26 or 27 sometimes and it is chirpy. Its alot to listen to and i chase alot of the chirps but when i hit a coin or a target i know it. I think its easier with my 6x8 on. Seems more stable for me and allows me to push her a little more. I dont look at my numbers as much when running hot like that just repeatable chirps and sweet tones. Hope this helps

I have noticed that if I'm in auto +3 and say it sets on 23 or so , its quite stable. Now if I put it in manual 23 it goes nuts in the same area where it runs auto +3 just fine.

Doesn't make sense but I have just learned to like running auto +3.

just a friendly FYI, the detector is not set the same in each case. somewhere in the manual it talks about the different channels, and in auto, that "23" would be the highest of just one of the channels, but in manual, a 23 would be the setting for all of the channels.
