Go back to basics. By introducing too many variables like changing settings, changing coils etc you will self sabotage. Use the resources in the FAQFAQ at the top of the forum page.
1. Put the stock 9 inch concentric MF coil on the detector.
2. Reset the detector to Factory Preset(FP), see the manual on page 44 for how to do this and what the readings should be afterward. A link to the manual is in the FAQFAQ.
3. Watch the first X70 video in the FAQFAQ, starting about 5 minutes in is where the information you need begins. Watch it all the way through the first time making notes of the time line on items you want to go back & review.
4. Go outside away from any buildings, power lines etc.
5. Turn the detector on in Factory Preset settings and find an area where there are no targets.
6. Lay out several targets about a foot apart, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, square pull tab, round pull tab, steel bottle cap, aluminum screw cap, bits of foil etc. Now practice listening to the sounds and how they ID. Practice your swing, practice pinpointing. Close your eyes, listen only, by swinging the coil smoothly and lifting it you should be able to center over the target and guess at the ID.
7. Take a few of those targets and bury them at about 5 inches. Practice some more.
8. Now you're ready to go out in the wild. Don't choose a trashy park or old homestead where there are thousands of trash targets that will frustrate you. Find an area with few targets, where there are few good or trash targets. After you have gotten used to the standard coil then you can transition to a different coil like a DD which is going to behave differently.
Don't overly raise your own expectations and set yourself up for failure. Everyone learns at a different pace and in a different manner. Even the most experienced of us have days where we don't find diddly, and work our tails off with no results. That's why this hobby is called Treasure HUNTING not Treasure FINDING. Hunt a lot, find a little, that's why we celebrate so much when we find anything worthwhile.
