i have the x-terra 70 metal detector and live in Virginia i am having trouble learning how to set the settings on my machine how to best set the ground balance the noise cancel sensitivity setting adjusting threshold i need some advice on how to better use my detector and to be able to adjust my detector i also bought the 6 inch 18.75 kHz DD COIL i cannot pick up anything with it is it possible that i am putting it on my detector backwards do i put where it has the MINELAB X-TERRA VFLEX DOUBLE D STICKER to the front facing away from the detector are to the back pointing towards the detector dont mean to sound so stupid i just really need some help on how to learn to use my detector please reply thank you

here is what I do

1. turn on my x-70
2. I go to menu select noise cancel, then hit mode auto button and hold the coil VERY still for 15 seconds till it sets
3. set detector in ALL METAL mode and find a section that is FREE of all signals
4. select ground balance in menu
5. push mode auto and pump the coil up and down about 6" several times until you hear the little tone that lets ou know it is ground balanced
6. push pinpoint/detect button and away I go, and yes I leave it in all metal mode, it is the ONLY way I hunt anymore

I use two tones, and dig all non ferrous signals (high tones) sensitivity anywhere from 20 to 24 depending on the site, threshold to 3 (I can just barely hear hum in my headphones) volume all the way up on 30

this detector is so simple I cannot believe how easy it was, I watched the video and went to the park and started hunting.

Go back to basics. By introducing too many variables like changing settings, changing coils etc you will self sabotage. Use the resources in the FAQFAQ at the top of the forum page.

1. Put the stock 9 inch concentric MF coil on the detector.
2. Reset the detector to Factory Preset(FP), see the manual on page 44 for how to do this and what the readings should be afterward. A link to the manual is in the FAQFAQ.
3. Watch the first X70 video in the FAQFAQ, starting about 5 minutes in is where the information you need begins. Watch it all the way through the first time making notes of the time line on items you want to go back & review.
4. Go outside away from any buildings, power lines etc.
5. Turn the detector on in Factory Preset settings and find an area where there are no targets.
6. Lay out several targets about a foot apart, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, square pull tab, round pull tab, steel bottle cap, aluminum screw cap, bits of foil etc. Now practice listening to the sounds and how they ID. Practice your swing, practice pinpointing. Close your eyes, listen only, by swinging the coil smoothly and lifting it you should be able to center over the target and guess at the ID.
7. Take a few of those targets and bury them at about 5 inches. Practice some more.
8. Now you're ready to go out in the wild. Don't choose a trashy park or old homestead where there are thousands of trash targets that will frustrate you. Find an area with few targets, where there are few good or trash targets. After you have gotten used to the standard coil then you can transition to a different coil like a DD which is going to behave differently.

Don't overly raise your own expectations and set yourself up for failure. Everyone learns at a different pace and in a different manner. Even the most experienced of us have days where we don't find diddly, and work our tails off with no results. That's why this hobby is called Treasure HUNTING not Treasure FINDING. Hunt a lot, find a little, that's why we celebrate so much when we find anything worthwhile.:)

Here's my actions when I go out.

1.Turn machine on, (of course).
2. Auto Ground balance, (Pg.42)
3. Press menu select and set threshold at 6
4. Press menu select for tones, (I use 99 tones try 3 tones at first)
5. Press menu select for sensitivity, I use 20. (Pg.30)
6. Press menu select for volume (Adjust to comfortable level).
7. Press menu select for noise cancel. I haven't messed with this yet. Read pg. 34
8. Press menu select, set threshold at about 5-6. Press pinpoint detect button
9. Select discrimination pattern by pressing patterns button. (pg. 22 for reference).
10. Go for it.

Your setting be will be saved even after you turn the machine off and then back on again. Take your time and learn the machine and then start tweaking to your liking. Don't make it overly complicated. Since all settings are saved, I turn the machine on, ground balance and go for it. I myself am just learning but, the above is how I got started. Good Luck.

Goes4ever is right on. I just used my Xterra for the second time today. I used the 6 inch dd 18.75 khz coil for the first time. The area I'm detecting is full of junk. The smaller coil seemed to help pinpoint stuff easier. I used all the stock settings, switching between pattern 1 and all metal to get better fix's on my targets. I noise cancle with auto and ground ballance with auto. One note though, when you do an automatic ground ballance and its still a little noisy just perform another auto ground ballance again. I ground ballanced three times in a row before I got one I liked and began detecting. I like all the coils so far but definately gained a little favor to the 6" in the trash. Two days ago I found three pennys (no wheats) and a bunch of trash. I used the stock coil all day. Today I started with the elliptical 18.75 and just got a bit more noise than I wanted. Changed to the 6" and found two raw silver nugets. One weighs about 7 or 8 grams and the other is about an half ounce. My second day ever in my whole life playing with one of these. I'm hooked.

Heres that picture. These things are black when you find them. Just look like another rock except they weigh a bunch. Almost the same weight as gold and lead. When I say black I mean black. Real heavy oxidation. My geoloigist friend at first said I had lead until he looked at them. Lead won't oxidize. Its his trailer park where I found them. Soaked them in lemon juice and used a toothbrush on them....my first treasure. Not counting about 8 pull tabs, 5 pennys up till today and a bunch of other trash. PS- Handsome. It sounds like your coil is mounted right. The mounting yoke has a gradual slope in the direction that points towards you while holding it. The front of the yoke has a steep rounded off spot facing forwards. I believe this is right. Mines out in the truck right now.
