Need help with my 705

I've been using my 705 for about 3 weeks now. I love everything about it but I need help on some old places I'm trying to detect. I went to the old part of town and was trying to detect around the jail house thats been there since 1890's. I've found a 1890's shotgun shell so I know there is some old stuff there. I'ts covered so much in junk that it beeps 10 times per swing (in all metal mode 99 tones) I keep getting good signals in the 20's and 30's so I dig them up. It's either a pop can or foil and it isn't fun digging nothing but that up. I've tried doing a negative threshold because i've heard that can be used for a surface eraser but that didn't work. and that comes to my next thing. I ground balance correctly and noise cancel but I always leave my threshold at 7. is that bad? how do I determine what threshold to use?

I'm using a DD 10 inch 7khz coil and I bought the gold pack so I have the DD 18khz coil also but I never put that on. how would I be able to detect them spots without wasting my time? what settings should I use and coil?

any info would help thank you!

Set your threshold at a level that is just barely audible...... on the threshold of making a solid sound. Set it so you can plainly hear it, then lower it one notch. If you are using headphones, make sure you set your Threshold with the headphones plugged in. If you are not using headphones, you should be.

If you are using All Metal mode, and it beeps 10 times per swing, then you have passed the coil over 10 metal targets. It is doing exactly what you've asked it to do.... detecting metal. If you don't want to hear the sounds of all the targets, build a Pattern so that those TID values are rejected. You said you were digging good signals in the 20's and 30's...... I'd be curious to know what it is you are expecting to find with TID's in the 20's? I can only think of a few things that I would dig, with a TID in the 20's. And if I am getting a lot of trash by digging those numbers, I have to figure out if it is worth the effort to continue, or to modify my hunt technique.

If you have difficulty with digging pop cans, try using Pinpoint Sizing or Prospecting mode. By using either of these, you can get a pretty good idea as to the size and shape of an object. If you get a "good signal" with the coil raised to a foot in the air, chances are it is much larger than a coin sized target.

If your area is cluttered with targets, you would do better using a small coil.

As to wasting your time..... it's never a waste of time if you have the potential to find what you're looking for. Whether or not you are able to do that is more a function of the user than it is the detector. Metal detectors are tools built on science. Learning to use them properly is an art. JMHO HH Randy

It depends on what you're looking for.
If target density is that high, a smaller DD is the hot ticket, else you risk missing a lot due to masking.

I highly recommend that you read Randy's four part blog article called, "Which Xterra Coil Is Best For Me?"

He explains how each frequency effects various target materials among other things which are important to success.

Just a note as I can't add much to what the others said. I once was detecting an old site and digging aluminum pop and beer cans one after the other(with a beep and dig tesoro). all of a sudden one of the "pop can" signals turned out to be an old brass railroad lock. As Diggers sign off says, "you never know for sure until you dig it. IMHO, I would accept all signals as discing them out could null out some good signals at the same time. Maybe only dig 30 on up and see what shows up. Patience Grasshopper...... I feel your pain. It's all part of it...and that part kinda sucks. HH. Bob.

Randy, you could not of said it any better then you did, but if I can let me add a couple of things..

Since you have only been using the x705 for a few weeks I would run in pattern 1 and with 4 tones until you get better at it.

Second, I would put that place on hold until you get alot better with the x705 and after you do get a lil better with the x705 a place like that will be a lil easier to MD.
