Need help with minelab explorer xs threshold

I am new to the Minelab and have a question. When I am detecting and starting out I have a good hum due to the threshold and sensitivity. After awhile I find myself having to adjust the sensitivity due to the lack of hum. Am I adjusting the right thing or should I not be concerned with it? I usually start with sensitivity at 24, and threshold at 10. Thanks for any help you can give.

Just depend how you want to hunt it .. with or without thershold ..

If you were to go to the Findmall Explorer Classroom forum you will find posts that some prefer to adjust the sens so they always have stable thershold humming away while others like to run as high sens they can do without getting outside interfernce and once they lower thier coil or start swinging that the thershold would disappear ..

So basically just experment with both and see which ones you prefer or which ones seem to get you the deep target hits the best.

Threshold at 10? you mean threshold volume? If so back it off till its just audible, lack of threshold really isnt much because of sensitivity... the threshold will go out over disced out targets... If your in a lot of iron or iron mineralized soil you wont be able to get a threshold no matter what sensitivity... it does help sometimes to lower the sensitivity to make it easier to pick off targets in iron, but it usually wont restore threshold... Its not a problem to hunt in a null, but requires a bit slower sweep while in a null.. I personally like having a threhold, so I run iron mask -15 most always... that way when it nulls I know its iron causing it... and iron is good... where theres iron there were people to lose other stuff

I am approaching almost five years of using my XS and I never use a threshold, I hunt mostly in Iron Mask -14 to -16 and have no need for the extra noise, especially since the XS (original) has trouble giving a slight threshold with it max'd out for deep sensitive hunting.........If I could have gotten just a nice soft threshold with the settings I use maybe I would have hunted with a threshold, but I was a former Garrett user and the last one I had was a silent threshold machine, so I was used to no threshold....
I understand one of the improvements on the XSII was a better adjustment for threshold.

Where to set the threshold is one that goes round and round so some of this may help. The threshold could have been called

Thanks for the input guys. I will try some different things to see if they help. It is obvious this topic varies from person to person and what kind of ground one is searching in. Thanks!
