Need help with ground balance....

Hi folks. I bought a Bandito 2 umax from Monte about a year ago. I used it maybe 2 times and can not understand how to ground balance. I am not the brightest bulb in the pack . I would lick to try/use this machine. In some iron infested sites. I hear it works great in those sites. Any help would help. I may have asked this question already and if I did that means I still did not figure it out. A video on how to do it, would be great. Thanks, GS

I have tried to explain ground balance before on the forum, it is hard to explain in written text. I learned how to do the ground balance by reading the manual, way before the internet and youtube. It is simple if you are shown how to do it by someone in person, one on one. Since you bought it from Monte, I would just call him, he would be very helpful I'm sure.

the Bandido II µMAX in hand, give me a phone call and we'll take care of the Ground Balance procedure. It really isn't difficult to GB a detector, although some, like most Tesoro's with a 3¾-turn control, can get a bit touchy as it is more of a coarse-tune design and not a fine-tune operation. It also depends on how mild or severe your ground mineral conditions are.

My number is below, and you can call most any time.

Back in 87 when I purchased my first Tesoro I use to always wonder if I was ground balancing correctly? I re-read my manual so many times I darn near had the whole manual memorized and come to find out I was ground balancing correctly all along. You may want to try ground balancing in normal tune/all metal mode and it may help a bit to hear the change in sound as you lower your coil towards the ground. Put the mode select switch to all-metal and the tuning switch to normal...hold the search coil about 2 feet above the ground and push the tuning switch into the retune position. After releasing the tuning switch(spring-loaded) lower the search coil to about 2 inches above the ground. If there is no change in the threshold sound or only a slight positive increase in sound the detector is properly tuned. If the sound decreases the ground adjust knob needs to be turned clockwise and if the sound increases greatly you need to turn the ground adjust knob counter-clockwise. When ground balancing in all-metal normal tune mode be sure to always push the tuning switch to retune after making any ground control adjustments to get your threshold sound back. Ground balancing in all-metal normal tune mode may help some hear the sound changes better cause all-metal/auto tune will automatically retune itself quickly and newcomers might struggle hearing the changes while lowering the coil to the ground.

Ground balancing at first can seem confusing but once you get the hang of it you will realize how simple it really is. Hope this helps and HH!

I've found balancing to be pretty simple by keeping in mind that turning the balance knob is similar to turning up or down the volume on a radio. If the threshold gets louder, turn the volume back, softer or non-existant turn the knob the other way. Often just a little is all that's needed and it's also helpful to have the threshold volume high enough to hear it easily. When hunting it should be at a lightly audible setting.

Thanks to all who responded . Monte when I have a little time I will definitely call you. I don't have a manual for this detector . I will also look at the ground balance videos. Thanks guys , GS

find a spot where there is no metal. have the threshold set just where you can hear it steadly in all metal mode. raise and lower the coil (pump) from about 1 to 6 inches off the ground. when coil goes down and the threshold sound rises, it is too positive. turn ground balance knob toward -, counter clockwise a bit. when the the coil goes down and the threshold sound lowers or goes silent, it is too negative. turn ground balancing toward + or clockwise a bit. do this until the is no change in the sound when pumping it up and down. there are youtube videos on how to do this. it is a very simple thing to do...
