Need help with find

Mike(MI)

Member
Hi Everyone,
Looking for a little help on a recent find. It was from a local park that goes back to mid 1800's (old from around here ;> ) I can read only some of the lettering on this brass piece and the central emblem is from the Most Noble Order of the Garter. I'm assuming replica but the only lettering I can read on the outside edge is IB BOTSON. The park is in Utica, Michigan. Have run into a dead end on the Internet. One of the photos is a print of the Noble order that I found on line and I can make out the unicorn and lion, and the french writing on the banner below. Any help would be appreciated to satisfy my curiosity. HH Thanks, Mike [attachment 63811 garter005.jpg][attachment 63812 garter006.jpg][attachment 63813 garter007.jpg][attachment 63814 garter008.jpg][attachment 63815 garter009.jpg][attachment 63816 garter.jpg]

...is it possible to post a larger photo or possibly lay it on a scanner for a closer look at the words and images?

Mike, from an antique tool forum, description matches your find:

...>Does anyone have info on a saw by "Ibbotson Brothers Globe Works". It's
>a 26" bladed rip saw with a mahogany handle, split nuts and a nib at the
>tip. The medallion is beautiful with a unicorn and a lion around a
>crest. Any info on history, rarity and value would be appreciated.

>From Roberts ("Some 19th Century English Woodworking Tools"): Ibbotson
Bros. were one of the leading steel manufacturers/saw, file & edge tool
makers in 19th century Sheffield. (From 1828 to sometime in the 20th
century.)

Steve,
Thanks a lot. Sorry it took so long, I guess I thought my reply would come back as a PM. I really appreciate your diligence on this thing. I don't know how you do it. I thought I knew the in and outs of Google but I guess not. Great work. :please: Mike
