need help with deciding on new detector

New member
got about 500 to spend on a new detector I am ready to retire my detector and i am ready for a step up. please help for I dont know which would be the best buy for my budget. i do basic detecting as you may all know. i dont hunt anything in particular i just hunt a little of everything. i usually hit parks, schools, yards..but i want to try my hand at beach, older sites, maybe some prospecting. any advice would be much apprciated. thanks in advance.

well I am in the same boat, I have been readin a LOT on a new detector, I have decided to get a minelab x-terra 70, good for land, beach and even gold prospecting.

I have an Explorer, an XLT as well. Any would be great choices. There are a lot of deals on very nice used detectors from fellow detectorists, every unit I ever bought I bought that way.

I used to own an XLT and really liked that machine. When the MXT was released, I bought one and never used the XLT again. I really like its ease of use and the ability to switch between the different modes and not have to re-ground balance is something I appreciate. It is a killer on nickles and with its higher frequency (14.9 Khz) it reacts to gold better than the XLT did (6.59 Khz).

If you end up buying the MXT I recommend that your next purchase be the 6X9 DD coil. That coil has replaced the stock 9.5 coil on both my wife's and my MXT's. It is a great all around search coil.

Regardless of what you end up with there are many fine, quality detectors to be had for around the price range you are looking for. Fisher, Minelab, Garrett, Tesoro, and Whites all make very good machines and you won't regret any detector you end up with for your price range.

Good luck in your quest for a new toy.. er umm, detector! :detecting:

...you turn down the gain and use the "beach" ground option setting. you might consider the M6. It just as good, not as fancy or expensive and does a good job in wet salt sand and everywhere else.
