Need help with an unusual item

Dug this out of my yard the other day. As you can see, spread out it's about 11 1/2" long and the rings are about 3" in diameter. The bar between the rings is slightly curved and appears to have been made like this and not bent. Looks like something off some part of a harness or bridle?

I found one similar to yours, I believe it is the bit from a horse harness.

I found the bit and the other piece at the same field I've been hunting. Everything I've found so far there has been Civil War and before. Some buttons dating back to the 1830's.

Technically this bit is called a loose ring snaffle. Here is a picture from the Civil War.

I presume this is a relatively common item from early - mid 19th century to probably the present?
