A friend of mine found this and we're trying to figure out what it is/date/ect. ?? Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Guy; I can't see a lot of detail, but it looks like a British Naval button. Is it a one piece button? What is the actual size (in relationship to US coins?)
 
I've not seen it, except in a picture. I believe it's got something on the back to pin it on. Size is about quarter size, I think.
