This brass piece was found by my hunting buddy at a Civil War camp. Does anyone know what it is?

It's part of a harness used for horses, a swivel................Mark

Thanks. I was thinking it was part of a harness. Maybe what the reins go through? I'm guessing it's civil war era, since was found in a civil war camp.

Has anyone seen a picture of one that's attached to a harness?

Mark is right. it;s part of a harness. It's not a sword mount.

towards his rear right side of picture, also a couple other types of rein guides, I think these are also refered to as gag swivels.

Good info guys. After all these years, I (and many others) have ID'ed this relic incorrectly. Some sites even have it advertised for sale as a brass sword mount. Maybe i should pass the info on thru email. CCH
