Need Help--Purchasing a DFX or MXT

Roadrunner

New member
I have only used a very cheap detector in the past, so I have limited experience. Talked to local dealer at length and he recommended the DFX or MXT. Although the Christmas sale if over, he said he will still include the free padded carryall bag, Royal GT Headphones, and the Bullseye II pinpoint detector if I buy the DFX300 for $1199 (DFX for $1100) or the MXT300 for $900.

I called Kellyco, and they will sell me the DFX300 without the accessories for $1050. I am not sure which of these is the best overall deal? Does anyone know of a better deal on the DFX300 or the MXT300? Are these units too complicated for my first real machine? I hate to buy a cheaper one then have to immediately upgrade. I plan to use it for beach, coins, and prospecting.

Looks like both deals are about the same to me if you want a Bullseye , bag and phones. If your coin and jewelry hunting why not get a M6 or P6t? I personally know the M6 gets the job done. The P6t has great reviews also. This will save you some cash too.
But from the DFX and MXT being your first pro detector I would say the MXT.

Roadrunner.. I went from a Bounty Hunter Time Ranger to a New Whites DFX-300 (with a 10"Double D coil.).DFX has several factory installed programs . Use those starting out get experience the work forward. Had it out in the front yard it pinpoints GREAT.Also put on a DX-1 SunRay probe.

You didn't mention where you're located, or why you want the '300' version of the DFX or MXT. They are the same as their standard versions except for the finish and the standard coil.

If you're in a highly mineralized location, where a lot of 'prospecting' takes place, you'd benefit from different coil than the 12" concentric. For some beach hunting, depending on the type of beach, the 12" coil is 'OK.'

Personally, I think any extra expense ought to go toward getting a good smaller search coil, and perhaps a top-end set of headphones. You're going to want a smaller search coil for prospecting and coin hunting when you get into rocky or brushy or trashy conditions, and my favorite from White's is the 5.3 Eclipse which is a 6

I am located in Pensacola, FL, and my wife and I (41 years) also travel out West on occasion. We are 61 years old. We are retired from our career jobs of 35 years, and my wife now works when she wants to, and we board about 20 horses on our small farm or 31 acres. Although we stay busy working in our church and around the farm, we have a reasonable amount of flexibility with our time. We go to our small cabin in the mountains of North Carolina (Cherokee/Bryson City) quite often. We stayed in our RV in Yellowstone for 5 months of 2008, and I wish I had taken a good detector with me, so I could have used it in the surrounding areas of Wyoming and Montana. We also go to a few RV rallies during the year, some close and some distant. We plan to go West for a couple months this summer. We truly thank God every day for the blessings we enjoy at this stage of our lives.

As I mentioned earlier, I am looking for a detector that will do a reasonable job on the beach, prospecting and coin location. I am not sure that one machine excels in all the areas, but I am sure that any good machine will do better than the one I now have. I am in touch with one of the sponsors on the forum, and he has been very helpful. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Sounds like Monte pegged it for you. I got a MXT 300 a few weeks ago but the weather up here has been a little to cold to really spend much time with it. What little time I have spent with it, I have really enjoyed it. When I got my 10"DD coil and the 5.3 coil, I retired the 12". If I ever get to a beach or do any relic hunting then I'll pull the 12" back out! Now I realize I should have just got the regular MXT and put the difference in money in coils and accessories.

I've really enjoyed my MXT. Not too complicated, with enough features to be very capable. I agree that you will want a smaller coil or two for trashy parks etc. The only advantage to buying the 300 version is to obtain the 12" coil at a better price than adding it separately later. With the 3 different modes it's a truly versatile machine.

Just my 2c - I'd go for the M6, good quality headphones and extra coil, smaller. Next would be the MXT if prospecting is in play.
Monte won't steer ya wrong - his post's are worth reading carefully.

Actually our DFX 300 package is less than $1,050 and the MXT 300 is less than $800 and both of these still include some free accessories, a padded carry bag, Lifetime warranty Razor Gator digger and a Pinpointer.
You can also partake in our BOGO deal as well. This will allow you to get a good second detector for little to nothing. Call me if you want me to go over the details with you.

I too would have to agree with Monte about the 12" coil on either model. If you are doing beach or relic hunting, the 12" is OK, other wise it is a bit too big for general hunting.
The next step up from a "very cheap" detector would be the MXT, the DFX might be a bit too much until you gain more experience.

I have a DFX now and I can tell you that it is a great machine. Having said that...the MXT is much more of an all around machine and would probably be a better choice for all around detecting and having as a sole machine. May not have a bunch of stuff to adjust but it has the most important ones and is great for gold and jewelry.

You can find the MXT300 for 765.00 , the MXT for 680.00, DFX300 1020.00, DFX 935.00

These prices are from a local dealer so I would think your dealer could do the same. I believe they also include the factory offered extras.

I bought a used mxt last year from a pawn shop, I had never used a detector before. I got a copy of the Jeff Forster's book on the mxt & began hunting. I learned something each time I went out & learned the most by going out with Kane23 he taught me a lot & now he is wishing he had not. I found over 1500 coins, several rings, all kinds of relics last year. I have not used any other machine other than the MXT & I can say it is a snap to operate. If you have past experience you should be able to find anything you want with the MXT. I do know that a smaller coil is the way to go. I started with a 6x10 & thought it was the best until I got a 4x6. Now the only time I use the 6x10 is to search a large lot for the hot spots then the 4x6 goes on. My last hunt was
with Kane23 I ended up with 274 coins 1 gold ring & a few other tokens. With the MXT the most important thing is ground the coil correctly once you get that down you will have to get a bigger finds bag.

I have had a MXT for a few years ,and got to say I did alot of reseruce and found the EXT to be very easy to use . and think you do need to get the 6X10 and the 4X6 coils which i find is all I use, youll never look back. Rick...Or.
