Need help on this medallion.:help:

Hi fellows,

Had our club hunt yesterday at the University of Washington and got a little wet and it was windy. I only managed to scrape up one silver with my SE and it was a 1923 merc which I'll take any day, but my other neat find was this medallion and thought it was worth sending a picture of as we all know what merc dimes look like. This thing is 2 and 1/8th inches in diameter and I think it's made out of bronze. Looks like a Greek guy on one side and possibly a Pharaoh on the other side. One of the other fellows at the hunt said it could be Cesar on one side and Cleopatra on the other, but that is a total guess. My first thought that it could have been something that was sold at the 1909 Alaska Yukon Expedition that was held on the campus grounds, but then again I'm just guessing. Thought I would see if any of you fellows might have any ideas of what this might possibly be. Thanks for any help on this and HH.

Might be a sorority medal. Looks like it says something like MELAE VIMAX.... what ever the heck that means. None the less i like these cool medals.

Eddie, It appears to be a copy of an ancient Greek coin as the lettering appears to be Greek. Possible it's a real one but I doubt it - as it sounds too big. The upside-down V is a Greek L and the jagged looking E is a Greek S. I can't seem to decipher the words.

Hey Eddie,
That looks like Medusa on the 1 side.
Cooll find!

Hi Eddie-
Neat find! i agree with Erik - looks like a copy of an ancient coin, most likely Greek. It may be a souvenir from the 1909 Alaskan Yukon Expo (possibly from the Greek Pavilion, if they had one). If someone could decipher the lettering, that may be a clue. I did see a token once, from the early 1900s, that was modeled after a Greek coin and was actually advertising a bicycle company. Good luck & HH!

Thanks Erik. I agree with you that it's Greek and way too big for a coin be it real or a copy. I looked up the Greek alphabet and it's kind of confusing. HH.

Thanks Bryce. I'm getting some help and more research might help me find out what it was for. Yep, that new avatar picture was taken at Christmas and one happy grandpa.:clapping:

Thanks Dew. I think your idea could be a good one about it belonging to someone who was in one of the soroities at the campus. Thanks again for your help.

Out of curiousity how deep was the medallion compared to the how deep the merc was HH Stryker

Well having just enough brains to be dangerous LOL I would have to agree with the soroities / frat house theory since it is probably heavier than the merc but less depth hasnt beem there as long and yes it was cold that day I was hunting UW also , I got 2 silver rings and 7.50 in change . I am from the tacoma club that hunted with you guys. HH and happy new year may your finds be many Stryker

That's a cool find Eddie. I've been swamped at work!!
