I found this sitting on the surface of an old farm field. When I first picked it up I knew it was probably an old copper coin from somewhere in Europe, most likely England or Ireland. I also knew it looked really worn and damaged.
The next day I had the opportunity to clean it and try to get an ID from it.
There is a good amount of detail on the obverse, Portrait bust facing right, with possibly a bow attached to the hair near the back of his neck. The throat-chin-nose outline is clear, and possibly part of the eye. You can definitely make out a "G" near his back, but after that it gets hard to tell.
On the reverse, you can just make out the person sitting on the chariot or chair holding the plant, arm tilted down. You can also sort of make out BRITA NIA, to include the line going across the bottom where the date would normally be.
The edges are worn down, and not completely symmetrical. Using a micrometer, I took four separate measurements which added together divided by four equaled a diameter of 28mm.
I have not yet weighed it, hopefully I will be able to soon.
I suspect this coin is a William III Halfpence, minted between 1695-1701.
Am I right?
