Need help IDing item found

I found this iron item saturday could it be a butt plate off a gun any help on a time period or type of firearm this might be (if that is what it is) would be greatly appreciated thanks joseph
 
The Iron buttplate you found has unusual indents at the top like the picture below. BTW I agree with SoArk (KIM) on the id. In US weapons, my guess would be the M1855 Rifle Musket or the M1855 Rifle (made from 1851 to 1861) and the M1861 Rifle Musket. These all had iron furniture. On the Confederate side, my guess would be the Richmond Rifle which also had an iron buttplate. Enfields had brass buttplates .

Bear in mind these are guesses and something for you to research further.
