need help finding waterproof detector for the beach

New member
i have been looking for a water proof detector to use at the beach, only real problem is the budget ( im sure thats common)
i saw one called the aquavision pro, its an underwater detector that says that it could also be used on land. is it anygood?
i wouldnt mind getting a used one but have a hard time finding those even on ebay. there either uncertain of the condition or its out of my price range. any help would be great, thanks again. :)

HEY DAN
Keep checking ebay and pawn shops around town ,Higher end detectors start 400.00 and go up , Thats for used . But they pay for them self's in just a few months
I found a diamond ring at the beach a few weeks back , paid for half of my excal. took 5 minutes find it , But it was also luck,, Guzz1

Even if you have to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house, get something quality, as the cheap route will cost you more than you will ever know. Don't go after the aquavision. Stick to what you see run by hunters on this forum, that are putting up the loot! It will be initially painful, but the rewards are GREAT!

Most coils on detectors are waterproof, you just have to be careful not to get the box wet. If you are on a tight budget then the Detector Pro Pirate is an excellent machine for the water. It is lightweight and all the electronics are in the headset. The headphones are water resistant.....NOT waterproof. They can take a quick dunking but nothing more. We have the Pirate and can speak from experience with using it. We also have the big guns....Excals....that we hunt with all the time and this little Pirate does a pretty good job of finding things. You might want to check out the postings on this forum for Detector Pro, there are quite a few people who really like the machine.

Gulf Hunter is 100% correct in suggesting that you get the best quality you can afford. The used detectors may seem like a bargin but you have to also wonder why it it is so good, why aren't they keeping it as a back up detector.

The older Fisher 1280's are simple to use and good on batteries. However an Excal has it beat like a Caddy to a Hugo. The Excal will pay for itself in saving you from digging iron and it will still respond to a gold ring under the iron. Something other detectors can't do.

PI's are deep, but almost no discrimination, so again you will waste time digging up bobby pins.

There are many detectors to chose from. In MANY price ranges.

As mentioned try to stay with a brand that is performing well to your area. What you may want to do is visit a club meeting, if you have one locally. This will give you a chance to see what people are finding and even talk to members to find out what detectors they are using. This is part of finding the right detector.

I know that the top end detectors work well world wide with great results. And little problem in doing it. The top end are Minelab, Fisher.......ECT.

So the choice becomes............What will my wife/girlfriend/wallet allow me to spend on a hobby..........that has a return in, friends and monotery value.

So which high end detector is better for beach and water hunting, Garret Infinium or Minelab Excalibur 2? I am looking at both and wanting to buy one for this years hunting. Been using a Tesoro Lobo ST and I like its iron discrimination ability to keep you from digging trash targets. Owned a Minelab gold detector before SD2200D for nugget prospecting and it found all the trash. Which one do you recommend and why?

Well the points below are the not so good ..........This is not bashing.

Garrett Infinuim....Is there such a thing as discrim. on a PI detector? Not really, Electronics are so-so vs detector is same price range.

Fisher CZ-21......May as well call it a Cz-20 with pin-point button change. Ok for fresh water, not so good on NJ mineralized beachs.

Minelab Excalibur........Here is another one.......may as well call it V1.01. In the Excal II it has NihM system, Lighter coil......Oh, color change.

So, as you see all detectors have faults............Question is which do you feel most comfortible investing in.

Personally, I have several water detectors...........Excalibur, WaterProof Explorer, Tiger Shark.
