Hello out there. I'm the new owner of a few months of a Minelab Explorer II and still on the factory preset. Was out with my daughter today she has a Minelab Xterra 30 and when I get a hit on the beach down here in Florida I go to detect and get various read outs such as a 00-11 and wonder just what is down there as I did not find what ever it was due to the tide and waves. Did find some coins and a gold locket and lots of pull tabs and bottel caps and alluminum cans. Just being on the beach with my daughter was worth the drive. Thank you ahead of time. Frank

There are so many variables your better off digging and keep track of whats in your area and how they read.

My advice for you when hunting the beach is to take it out of factory preset, turn on Iron Mask, and run it down to IM -16. This way you won't be missing a lot of signals that would equate to small thin gold bands...the kind that have big diamonds in them...and other things, like gold chains and earrings and stuff. Trying to discriminate trash at the beach is a sure ticket to finding mostly pocket change, silver rings, and maybe medium to large gold bands. As you can see from bob's numbers, trash and gold are too close to call. Best bet on the beach is to dig it all. I found a BUNCH of diamond rings this summer.

Here are some more numbers for you.

Thank you for such a quick response. I'm still very much in the learning phase of this my first metal detector. Next step is to make a test garden of coins and trash to learn the readings. Thanks again, Frank

Hello and thankyou for such a quick and helpful reply. I am very new at this metal detecting activity and the minelab is my first machine. My 10 soon to be 11 year old daughter is the reason I got the explorer and for her an Xterra 30. She uses her machine but at the beach it is not that great and she likes for me to hunt and she digs. The hunt we had yesterday did help motivate us for more in the future and will apply your settings. Thanks again, Frank

Frank, that sounds great...having a daughter that enjoys detecting with you. That 11 signal you got is pretty much what you're looking for, though gold rings can come in ANYWHERE in the range depending on size, mass, and type of gold. That's why it's best to dig it all at the beach. If you have a certain piece of trash like a pulltab or bottlecap of a particular type that's giving you fits, that's where the sophistication of the Explorer comes in because you could then decide to ignore those things.

My sister is very close to you...she lives in West Palm Beach. She's an avid detectorist and the VP of the Gold Coast Treasure Hunter's Club, which meets monthly and has a lot of detecting outings, hunts, etc that they do. You should check it out...could be a lot of fun for you guys. Here's a link to their site:

Bryce, like you I have also heard nothing but good about it. Jerry (AKA Tinfoil) has spoken highly of it and says he never takes it off. I'm STILL waiting for mine and it's been coming for a LONG TIME. Somebody told me they spoke to KellyCo and the coils are "waiting to clear customs" and should "hopefully be shipped out by next week sometime". I hope that's the case because I too am anxious to test it out.

Hello Mike, When they say it's a small world then it truely is. My daughter and I just joined the West Palm Beach club and our first offical member meeting is next Thursday the 11th. I have spoke with Linda whose husband is a pilot for a major airline as am I. Sandy at Minelab was very instrumental in having me buy the explorer and in other aspects of my life as far as health. So the metal detector club is rather close knit and intertwined. I will look forward to meeting your sister and probably already have. Sandy just yesterday spoke of a small coil for the explorer and now I see some postings to that effect. If you wish to contact me via E-mail that would be nice. By the way how long have you had your explorer II ? And your sister's name? Take care, Frank

Hello and thankyou for a very spetacular site. Wow the information is all there. Sandy at Minelab told me about Findmall.com and we are very thankful for your's and the other's help and information. I am very new at this sport/hobby as is my 10 year old daughter but we both enjoy the hunt and thrill of seeing what our machines have found. The response from you all has been most gratifing and appreciated. When we first got our machines we saw another man on the beach and as we approached he hurried away and we felt a little hurt. We are very good at covering our holes and trying to leave everything as close to the way we found it. Again thankyou for a grat site to go to and others should go there to. Respectfully, Frank

Frank, I had the Explorer II for almost a year before selling it and getting the Explorer SE a couple of months back. I also have an Excalibur and a Fisher CZ-70.

My sister's name is Stacey and when I was down there visiting before I hunted with her, Linda, and some others from the club. You'll be having some fun times ahead, for sure.

I have the small coil coming soon, so we'll see on that. I'm sure you and I will meet at some time in the future. Happy hunting!
