I found this button last weekend and would like to know what it is and how old. The back of the button says " Extra Quality". It doesn't look that old to me, but it came from the yard of an old house, so it could be old. Can anyone identify it for me? Thanks.........Roger
Congratulations Roger! You have just found a Civil War Officer's button! They call these "Army General Staff Officers" buttons and with a backmark of Extra Quality yours dates about 1850's-1860's. The gilt has remained on your button giving that new shiney look. Don't try to clean it, it is perfect just the way it is. Either an Officer lived at that house after the war or military activity occurred very close to where you found this. Great find!
ksdigger, thank you for the information on the button. i thought it might be a civil war era button, but the excellent condition of the button made me think it was only a few years old.
since this was found in west central illinois, an officer must have lived in the house at one time. does the button have any value other than being from the civil war? thanks again for the information.............roger
I always refer to the North South Traders Price Guide, the latest I have is the 10th edition 2003. They have listed a Union General Staff button in excavated condition $30-$50 but also try looking at other Relic websites and see what "on average" they go for. Hope this helps. Again...you have a superb condition dug button!
ksdigger, thank you so much for the information on the button i found. it sounds like the button is worth more than all the stuff i found the last several trips detecting....lol.
i found the button in a location that has alot of clay... maybe this helped preserve the condition of the button. i will do some searching and see if i can find an updated price for the button. thanks again for the information and happy hunting...........roger
