Need an opinion

I know this has been probably beat to death, but here goes.

I have an opportunity to hunt several farm houses and fields this Spring and Summer here in NJ. Currently I own a CZ6a with all 3 coils, a DFX with 3 coils and several water machines ( Excal, HH PI). Doing lots of Winter beach hunting with the 3 VLFs has my shoulder ready to fall off ! I have now hip mounted the CZ, but I am seriously thinking of selling the Excal and getting another Tesoro. I am split between the Tejon and Vaquero.

The reason for an opinion is this...I would also like to use the detector in the dry sand and possibly in the damp sand ( but not in the suds) to hunt for coins and gold jewelry. I really like the V due to it's 1 battery design, but the T has a higher frequency. The V is probably a little lighter but I also like the T's dual discrimination feature.

All in all...I LOVE THE LIGHTNESS !!! So I will be getting either one shortly along with a smaller coil.

Since I do have the opportunity to hunt these farm sites, and I have not been hunting land sites for awhile due to me going to the beach every weekend, I will be turning into a relic hunter and will love every minute of it.

I have been metal detecting for over 20 years, so I can learn machines and not get frustrated. But I would like some feedback about what you would think the best machine would be for the applications I described above.

Thanks in advance

JC

These two machines are very close depth-wise, but the Tejon has the advantage there. Also, the Tejon is at a higher frequency and it hits harder on gold than the V. Plus, like you said, the dual disc is a nice feature. One other thing the Tejon has that the V doesnt is the adjustable audio frequency. Thats a nice plus. Both may not be the absolute best in wet sand, but again the Tejon has a depth advantage so I would push you toward getting one of those. On wet sand you may want to use the bigger 12 x 10 double D coil on T. That would give you more depth than the standard 9 by 8. Plus, the T is proven relic machine with great track record.

What a nice selection of tools you have, Rover!

From what I've seen on the forums, that Excalibur probably fills a valuable slot in your capabilities.

LOL You might just ADD another to your fine collection!

Rm...yeah, it's a nice bunch, but the capabilities of the Excal are not outshining the hurt in my arm !!! Since I really am psyched up to hit these farm houses and fields, I think the Tejon is the way to go.

I think the Tejon is the way to go also. I am really pumped to hunt these farm houses and fields. I know I am planning to hunt them all day long, so that's one of the main reasons I want a good, light relic machine.

I assume the Tejon is balanced very well with the battery pack on the back end ?

I also have a Tejon and it's great.

The Tejon gets my vote for relic. It's sensitive so it may chatter a bit more than many other machines, but that's the inherent design being a hot hound dog, and that doggie has a language.
And can swing it all day - but must stop swinging several times a day ( ya got 2 dig sometimes )

I'd also have to give my vote to the Tejon, for the features it has over the Vaquero. I think the depth is very close. If you've hunted for 20 years, and used a DFX, the Tejon will be so simple to learn, almost turn on and go. It's light and perfectly balanced, better balanced than the Vaquero. But it is nice to just have to pop in that one 9 volt into the Vaquero. That's the one thing I prefer on the Vaquero over the Tejon.

This is really nice...I am still torn. The V may have the edge since it may be a bit more 'quite' and I would love to use it for dry sand hunting. I would seem to think the hot T may be a bit too crazy with all those aluminum bits. But see...that's where the dual discrim can work as an advantage. Plus, the T in all metal ground balanced correctly may be a hot detector for gold jewelry in the semi-wet sand.

I keep the beach hunting in the equation because I know I will be taking it to the beach. Saying that..is one better than the other 'environmentally' in terms of sand getting in them ?

Sorry for all the questions !

And no...I CAN" GET BOTH !!!

Since the Cibola has a frequency shift, valuable in buddy hunting, or competition hunting,
It seems to me the Vaquero would have been better served with a notch feature than also having frequency shift.

I very much appreciated Mike Hillis' presentation on use of the Golden, especially with the GB mod.
