Need advise on some underwater units?

New member
Ok poor me, I can't afford a new Excallibur, nor a used one as I've seen them gor for $900. So I'm looking at these units in the used markets.

Garrett Sea Hunter mark II
Tesoro Tiger Shark
Viper Trident.

The viper is the cheapest new and used, and would get me in the surf faster...than searching and praying for a used Tiger Shark or Sea Hunter. I hear mixed reviews about the viper, I don't plan to dive with it, but it will be under water.

Thoughts on the Viper? Is it really made in china as some posts on the internet state?

I'd say max I can spend right now is about 400-500

any help would be nice.

Chris

try the ATPRO from Garrett...its in the price range your looking for

Underwater where...fresh water or salt water ?

If fresh only, a Tiger Shark will be the best bet.

Salt water, Garrett Sea Hunter, but be aware that is a pulse unit so it does not have discrimination abilities like an Excal or CZ21 which will work very well in the salt water. The Tiger Shark, from what I read, is not very stable in the salt water but a killer fresh water unit.

I would save up and stay away from the Viper.

oops sorry , yeah should have stated I'm on the west coast if florida...All salt water in my future, no fresh water.

Hi Chris, In Salt and fresh the Sea Hunter is a good Detector, In Descret 4R fresh say 4 or 5 Elemination you will kill most foil and doubl beep on iron if its
not deep say 4 to 5" But if its deep say 8 to 9" it will be one beep, But the Sea Hunter wont Disc out Iron??? cozz its a PI unit???
In salt you can use standerd i use 0 Elimanation the less Elemination the Deeper it will go with the stock 8" coil im talking 13" in standered, Not so deep in Descret??? But with the 10x14 in standerd yon can go 17" Depending on the size of the target?? Im a old VLF user and the Sea Hunter a PI unit
i Like it the best, In Decret if you go 7 or 8 is almost Like a VLF unit with Disc??? But i got it to go deep and cancel out the Minerals and it dose,
No falsing, But if you do get some your on a bad black sand Beach in standerd 0 turn up the Elemination some,
Its my water unit 4R fresh N Salt, For the turf i use my Whites V3i and for a back up the Whites Eagle II SL 90,
I think Garrett has a better water unit else id have a Whites, Whites has the BEST Service Bar None,
On the Sea Hunter it has no volume so i use the Land Headphones, Mickfin,

i got my back up excal for 500$ u just have to ask around salt water i would go for the sea hunter

Sea hunter is the only one i would use for salt water out of the ones you have listed.
If it were freshwater i would say tiger shark.

Good luck

I would say a sea hunter or sand shark, remember buy a good scoop youll need it they both go Deeeeeeeeeeeeep!
good luck

Buy a Viper and make sure you have a garbage bag ready to throw it in. 98% of them break within the first week. Read your forums and stick with the popular brands. Garrett AT Pro is a good choice and their customer service is more than excellent. Check with some of the dealers, a new one will fall right in the top of your price range and it is a great machine.

all salt...............get the sea hunter!!!!!!!!!! i know its a pi but when you really learn to use it you will be happy. it does require a lot of digging but that might be a good thing?

tigershark is a great freshwater machine.

viper trident.........i have not heard good things about it and it would be hard to re-sell.

at pro........... probably not the best for salt but capable. the sea hunter would be much better!

there are 400 to 600 dollar deals on used excals and cz20/cz21 machines all the time you just have to see them and get them before everyone else does.

Money may be tight, but your best bet is a CZ21, A killer in salt, a killer in fresh, and a killer on land. 2 of us hunt together for the last 4 yrs. found everything. Went to some wooded areas yesterday, and my buddy says lets drive 20 miles to an area he says looks good. I told him aint no one been in this woods in a hunded and fifty years . we wont find anything. I pulled out a 1823 half cent, he pulled out a 1831 large cent. The CZ21 they do it all

Had the Excal, and don't miss it at all after using my Sea Hunter. All I can say is the Sea Hunter is a DEEP DEEP machine.. You don't have the tones like the Excal, but I dig everything anyway. JMO

Thanks to every one for their input...Trident is out of the running ...whew glad I didn't get one.

I may have to wait a bit for my waterproof detector, $1200 car repair bill has put a hurting on the wallet/savings/equity line...damn cars

There is always the irresponsible option. Don't tell the old lady. Go get a CC. If you can find a lender to give you a large balance [the economy has them tightened up]. And charge one. LOL. Or. Try getting credit through amazon. Its just a thought.

Keep in mind. Mandatory stuff you need...cannot water hunt without are:

Good scoop. rtg or proscoop or others listed in banners here.

3 to 5 mm wetsuit. I have a 5 mm one.

Gloves and booties for suit. You might get away without gloves...but protect your feet at all costs. You need booties.

This might change your decision to get into it atm...as the stuff here is not cheap. Used...maybe 2-300 total.

The wetsuit I have is 9 years old, and works great. People think I am nutts going into 45-50 degree water...but Im nice and cozy.

Even in places like FLA you need this stuff.

Hope you can get into water huntin.

I wouldn't part with my viper for all the money in the world, but I would let you have it for free if you like.I like to sleep at night, but the people i bought it from I'm not to sure about. I even bought two on the BO-GO now my Buddie wont even talk to me.If your close by i will even show you how to use it(works great as a hood support). P.S.looking for a new hunting buddie. Hal Clark

I also have a sea hunter II and a Sov Elite(excals little sister)after you chase your tail for an hour ill let you find what you missed with one of my other MDs.. If your close by let me know.
