I know this has been discussed before but what is the best way to clean nickles? I want to experiment before I try to clean the nickle 3 cent piece I found Sunday.
thanks to all, Bruce in Ct

Naval Jelly. Available at hardware stores, or the household cleaners section at Payless Drugs, etc...

Let it sit overnight and see the magic in the morning...the red color is gone with a nice bright and shiny nickel without any damage...HH

I have to kind of laugh at this because we go to great length to clean those pennies but will use a wire brush just to see a date on those SELDOM found nickels. I do like the ketchup method especially on those red ones. Nickel is a pretty strong metal. I think the real challenge is those war nickels. If you use anything to harsh it looses its luster and collectability.

Well Christopher, I tried the ketchup trick on a buffalo and it cleaned right up without brushing. Took two days but looks great ! Thanks for the tip.
I'm trying a shield nickle now. I'm thinking the older ones with more corrosion might be helped with a little brushing fron a soft toothbrush.
