hello I'm about to by a metal detector, i have been making a lot of Internet searching for the past few months, i decided on the Mxt pro, but before i was thinking on buying a Garret scorpion thank god y change my mind, but now i think i have my doubts on this metal detectors ( x Terra 705 , Minelab Sovereign GT, or etrac ) , i would like to prospect coins jewelery should i stay with my first decision The mxt pro , i only have 800 dollars.
Stick with it. The E-trac is out of your price range. The Sovereign GT is a great detector, but has no meter. For coin shooting the MXT will do you well. Pull the trigger already. Winter is coming.
Thats right! If you get addicted to this as we are, you should pay for that MXT in clad by snowfall..the jewelry will be pure profit...Its more important to read the signs where the money is, and less what you swing..especially clad stabbin'..'course you gotta be really committed and put in a lot of time...read a lot of these posts, ALL of them, not just your particular brand, especially the ones on etiquette, good luck young fella, keep hangin out here, you will learn a lot! I'd suggest looking at the Tesoro Vaquero. It doesn't have a meter, but has excellent discrimination and depth and is very reasonably priced for the quality you get, plus it is light as a feather. HH.
unless you plan on also hunting gold nuggets (ie.: gold in it's natural form, of pinhead or flake sized nuggets), then I wouldn't get the MXT. It's a cross-over machine designed to do both prospecting (gold in natural form) and crossover to coins/relics/jewelry, if need be. As such, it excels in neither arena. If you could only have one machine, and if it needed to do both venues, then I suppose teh MXT is an option. But if you're just going to hunt coins and jewelry, the mxt is not a good option, in my opinion. For example, just last night, I was hunting right behind an mxt users at a old park demolition scrape site. I would get coins and targets right behind him. In the end, I think he was about to ditch his mxt as fast as he could find the $ to invest in an Explorer. For $800, you might be able to find a used explorer. It's tough to get used to (all the fluty sounds), but once you do, you'll leave an mxt in the dust.
Explorers are good all around machines.... but worthless as raw gold machine. Your best bet is to get the right machine for the job. There are trade offs with every machine NONE are going to do it all great. Like Tom said you should be able to pick up a used Exp for under $800. Multi freq handles most soil conditions including salt water beaches and noise cancel works well.... if it can be cancels it will. I dont know that the average digger would do quite as well behind an MXT like Tom did thou. Ive used an MXT and didnt do to bad.... i just liked the ability that the Exps have in finding old coins and silver.
I agree that for the most bang for the buck one should consider a dedicated gold machine, or one that is known to do well on coins, or good for relics etc. That said, I've done very well with the MXT and IMHO for a "do it all" machine, it serves quite well. If you'll only rarely detect, but use it regularly for coins etc. I think it'll do you fine. My two bits.

I forgot.........what about a Teknetics T2..........its a excellent gold machine........and does well on coins too. The 5" Teknetics coil will slay what White's has to offer in that size range. Not bashing White's.......been using them for over 25 years.
