Need advice on smaller coil for trashy area

Johnny Cache

New member
Well it looks like 2 years of solid pounding has depleted my favourite detecting location. However, there are a few spots within the area that are full of iron and other old junk. I'm sure there are good targets mixed in, but I think I need a smaller coil for my A.T. Pro in these spots.

Any advice from the experts here would really help...

I can only speak for the 4.5 inch Sniper coil. It is a killer in these situations. After that you will have to start removing all the iron to uncover the goodies below.

I've done really well with the 5x8 in bad trash. Low and slow, at times sitting on the ground while I wiggle it. The sniper is excellent as well but not quite as deep. Both can deliver the goodies.

Both coils mentioned should work well. There is yet a third way to deal with this, and it will get you even better results. Dig out the trash and see what it is masking. Your present coil will do just fine. My buddy & I cleared an area of trash about a year ago and got several more coins including a 1919 wheat cent plus a nice silver ring with a pearl set in it. And we also got lots of old rusted bottle caps, nails and pull tabs. All that trash masked the good targets.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. Maybe I will try the Sniper coil. I will search for some videos and see if I can learn more about it.

John--I would love to remove all the junk/iron targets, but it would require an amazing amount of digging. The only problem I have with that is that this spot is right along the main road in town, directly in front of the nicely manicured grounds of the local golf course clubhouse. I have absolute permission to detect here and I am very careful, but I do try to minimize the amount of digging...

I just broke down and got ALL the coils for the AT Pro...They all have their strengths and weakness, The 4.5 sniper is my choice for tot lots and under bleachers...The 5x8 is great in tight spots, the woods, and in trashy open fields...The 9x12 is a coin killing monster in open fields with little trash...The 8.5x11 is the go to coil for first time hunts in an unknown area...the 6.5x9 Concentric is a great coin and jewelry getter in clean areas with little trash...

HH,

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that the 4.5 sniper is a coaxial coil and doesn't pick up anything above the coil. It's absolutely deadly around and under playground equip. under benches and even under fences that don't reach the ground. Not many coils around that can do that. HH.
