Need Advice On New Detector

GregM

New member
Hello All.... I have been reading all of your posts so that I can finally make a huge decision. My wife is buying me a new detector for my 50th b-day which is coming up soon. I have to decide which machine would be best for me. I have a Sharp Shooter 2 which has found me all sorts of goodies in the past few years. You can read about the $10,000 ring I found for a couple on the beach on the Bounty Hunter website. I live on LONG ISLAND so I am surrounded by some great beaches, which I love to hunt. I would like to venture into the water abit...say up to my knees, be able to kill on the dry sand, and would also like to be able to hunt for relics and coin in Vermont, all with the same machine. I have been interested in the Minelab Excal 1000 and the Whites Beach Hunter ID. I read that these machines are great in water but I have read very little about them on a field in Vermont..I have about 1,000 plus dollars to play with. Mike in Viginia seems to be extremely lucky with his Excal. I love that plat. and diam. ring he keeps flashing. Thanks GREG

can help.Up to knee deep or wet sand. EXPLORER only....29 tones...
28 frqncy. I have both exclb and exlr, can't compare 17 and 28 frqncy , if u don't want waist your time on battlecaps and trash (like penny)then explr the best. Digital screen is very accrued,
if it shows 00-29, that it means 25c or silver ring .. 95% accrued....up to u to gig it or no...

Alex, thanks for the info....I do like the Explorer. It looks like an awesome machine.....I have one problem with this machine- if I drop it in the water or get hit by a wave ,it will become an expensive paperweight. I would not want to take that chance.I believe it is -not- waterproof.GregM

Trust me they do sneak up on you and yes it can happen.....I love the explorer so much I have taken my chances but sooner or later it will happen. I say, decide what you like better.....Water or dirt....then get that one and save your money to get the other....I would never use the excaliber in dirt due to I have no good idea what I am digging before I dig.the explorer you can see alot more in more than one way.....I would be upset if I had to use excal in the trenches. Just my opinion.

Mattockman, So you are saying that the Excal cannot tell you what is in the ground.....OK, I pick water and wet sand detecting over dirt...I can use my SS2 in the dirt as I have had much luck with it. My choice would then be the Excal 1000. Thanks ......GregM

Greg, I also live on Long Island call Treasures Unlimited (631 447 6910) Talk to Fred and Mike.Thats were I buy my equip. from.I heard that whites has new spider coils for there machines. Tell them That Tom T. sent you.

I have had both the Explorer II and the Excal 1000 and the Exp II paid for both of them and a whole lot more in a very short time. The Excal is great too but didn't use it very long before I hung up the hobby for a couple of years. They are both heavy unless hip or chest mounted. For you this may not be a problem. For a 60 year old like me it is. I have been out of the hobby for a couple of years and I'm just coming back and studying on several detectors trying to decide what to buy. I will only second what others have said and that is don't take a non waterproof machine into the water. It's not a question of if you'll get it wet, just when. If I were you I would spend plenty of time researching the different detectors. Compare prices, how well they operate in different conditions, warranty and repair histories (salt water is extremely tough on even the best)and even batteries. Yes, I know, batteries seem so insignificant but the cost of them can add up. Does the detector you are looking at have rechargeables and also allow for the use of regular batteries. Plus, you're going to need a good scoop and a good stainless steel is the only way to go. There are lots of things to consider in addition to those I've listed but that's probably enough to think about for now. Oh, yea, good wet or dry suits aren't cheap if you're going to be in cold water. And even though you say you're going to only go into shallow water, I promise you that you will get totally wet. Anyone who lives on the beach and spends lots of time in the water will verify this. Not trying to discourage you but there are lots of things to consider. But once you do it you will be addicted like the rest. Best of luck to you.

NO ONE! on here can tell me that the excaliber has more info than than the explorer......Make a choice and live with it!

Thinkin2, Great info....Is the New Explorer good in wet sand? I would do wet sand and dry sand and stay out of the water all together if the machine can go from wet to dry without having to change settings constantly.I do realize that the exposed wet sand was at one time covered with water and goodies will be found in this area. I would therefore concentrate my efforts to this area.Would the Explorer SE be the machine of choice? I also like to walk the dry sand because I have been very lucky there. Is it easy to operate? I am not an idiot but does it take a PhD to get the unit working for me. (I really don't want to get wet )......Would the new Fisher 75 be a better choice if I don't go into the water? Seems it is also quite a machine.I am sorry if I am rambling but I have to make a choice which I have to live with for a long time...... I need to make the right choice real soon... thanks... GregM

Greg, there is a learning curve to the Explorer but it doesn't really take too long. I had the Explorer II and it worked great going from dry sand to wet and back. One of the best machines out there imo but don't take it near water. Stay on the sand and be careful of tidal pools as well. It has a really sweet sound on gold and the numbers are very accurate and consistent. You just have to get familiar with the different modes and decide which one you like most. Good luck.

Tom, Thanks for the info. I think I have made a decision.I will call your friends and find out a price on some equipment once I get the list together. Thanks for your help...GregM

You got a '45 wheatie??? Alright! You only have about $1094.99 left to recoup now, huh?

Seriously, where did you find that? Copper is nice but we need some GOLD and some ICE.

almost waist deep in salt water....just make sure control box a little bit above..and it's gonna be all right..... and silicon upper shaft.
alex

Alex, You take your non waterproof unit into salt water... waist high....you are daring aren't you. Silicone where exactly on the shaft?

I think he means everywhere that's metal. Would help to keep the saltwater from corroding it but you would still need to thoroughly clean it after use. And you're right, he is very brave. Waist deep in the surf around here will eventually put you under water because of the occasional high wave that rolls in quickly and the occasional hole that you will step in. Seems like I saw a rig a year or so back on here where somebody waterproofed an Explorer. But I guess my question is why do it? They cost too much to expose to elements they aren't designed for. Use them on land, safely away from risk of water, and use a waterproof machine for going into the water. Of course, this is just my opinion but it makes sense to me.
Jerry

not really waist deep but knee deep for sure....
with exclbr i'm confused sometimes about target ID tone as a result
i have to dig more, with explr i don't waist that time, i know
95% what i'm digging (except pulltabs=gold)
if digital screen shows 00-07/9 it's bottlecap and it's 95% accurate,
at my trashy beach it saves me lots of time.
Buy both try them and return one....if you hunt only dry/wet/knee deep sand just trust me  explr is the best choice..
