Need advice on long handled scoops

Dancer

Well-known member
When I get home next week I'm ordering a scoop. Just got my first water machine [AT Pro] been hunting the beaches. At home I'll be hunting lake beaches shallow water, boat dock & ramps. So I know stainless is stronger but a lot heaver [6+ lbs] Alum. [4+ lbs] better for hunting beaches. Do the handles break off the Alum. much? I know how to take care of things. I'm going with a 6" scoop no matter what. I just can't see myself lugging a 6-7 lb scoop up and down the beach when I'm down here.

Dancer, I got the 6" mesh all the way around metal for the digging front its light i, Its from Rellys I welled a 30 degree handle 1/2 way down the handle faces the front of the scoop,
But to each its own go to www.rtgstoer.com 954 971 6102 Their in FL, Thats My 2 cents 4R you, Keep your coil flat on the ground and the shiny side up Good Luck,
Mickfin,

The stainless scoop that I use weighs 5 lbs empty (including the 2 lb ash wood handle)

It is the larger of the 2 models they make.

I think the smaller one weighs about 1/2 lb less, but not positive.

As with any scoop the weight changes significantly when the scoop is filled (heavy)! So an aluminum scoop may be a little lighter empty but is still pretty darn heavy when full. The trade off is I almost always get the target on the first scoop you may find that a little tougher to do with a 6" scoop.

And the stainless scoop will outlast the aluminum scoop several times over!

Of course this is my opinion and is just an F.Y.I.

Steve :)

Kaptainkosmic makes a heck of a scoop! That being said, to answer your question, I have never broken an aluminum handle before, but I have bent the crap out of the lips of the scoops prying and digging through rocky areas. If you do buy aluminum, I would recommend a Stainless steel lip. They will bend a little as well but they are much tougher and the SS penetrates hard or tough bottom better than the Aluminum. Just my 10 cents
