NEED ADVICE ON HUNTING IN DISCRIMINATE, WITH SILVER UMAX

I may have been detecting for some time but i normally hunt in all metal , and I have a permission to hunt a 100+ year old house lot . I will be using the silver umax , and i will hunt in disq so i need advise from anyone who has experience with this machine , any tips i could use them Lord willing i will make a video as well - probably the best chance of finding a silver coin in a long time thanks bro,s

Gunnar....

Are you using the same ground balance modified Silver µMax? If so, I think the only way to ground balance the Silver µMax is to use Monte's 'power balance' method in Disc. mode. The Silver does not have a traditional threshold based all-metal mode, so the only way ground balance is to adjust GB knob negative till it makes noise on the upstroke while bobbing the coil to the ground and then adjust positive until noise stops and is quiet. Then cherry pick the place with high enough disc to nab the silver first and see if the spot is worthy. Then if you get some silver, you can lower the disc. to get the other goodies.

Sometimes when I hunt a house site, I will start out with my disc to where it will get nickles. Most of the houses I hunt are not very big. I will eye ball a small section. Hunt like I said. Than I will grid the other direction with much lower disc to see if I can find small gold. I like hunting for chains. If I am getting enough nails to build a shead, I raise my disc to get rid of them nails. By that time in my first section is finished, my old butt and back is shot. I will come back another time and do another spot. I do not pick out big spots either. Some times it is so trashey, I use my Compadre. Have fun and take your time... KEN. Ind.

Don't have the Silver, but do have the Silver Sabre µmax that preceded it. I've had very good luck by setting the disc to where it just nicely accepts a nickel when the coil sweeps over. I set this by actual doing, not blindly depending on the marking on the detector. I've marked the faceplate where tabs drop off and where zincs drop off. signals above those is nearly always something good. Sensitivity as high as the area will allow without chatter. Hope this is helpful.

Hello, I would go in in all metal first to get a feel for the site. Just go over the area, not necessarily dig but just see how many signals you get for the particular area you want to hunt. Then you can get a feel for how much masking may occur if you raise your disc up and what size coil to use. Make a decision from there if you want to cherry pick if you will miss much or if the effort to dig more at lower discrim is worth it. At least you will have it on your mind to what kind of site you are dealing with.

Here's what I'd do. I'm pretty certain that the old house site is loaded with nails. The Silver µMax is a ED120 so when set at its minimum discrimination setting most nails are discriminated out. I'd start there and dig around 20 targets or so to get a feel for what kind of trash is there. There's no need to use more discrimination than necessary. I have used this tactic at trashy parks that were loaded with trash and pull tabs when I didn't feel like digging it all. When 19 of the 20 trash targets that I dig discriminate out a lower discrimination setting, I'll go with just enough discrimination to knock out the 19 and tolerate the occasional trash target that discriminates out at a higher discrimination setting.
