Need advice on a new detector

Hello Elmo...if I may offer some advice...between the two detectors you mention, my experience tells me that you will be happier with the Lobo. However, I have to agree with Treasure Nut on this one. The X-Terra-70 allows you to change frequency of your machine the standard VLF coil at 7.5kHz, to either the lower VLF coil at 3kHz for those deeper coins, to the higher frequency coil at 18.75kHz for better sensitivity on smaller items such as nuggets. Instead of the age old "you need a different machine" for different size and content of targets", the X-Terra-70 will give you the best of both worlds by just changing the coil for that day's hunting. As a Tesoro and Minelab dealer, I have hunted with both and my suggestions to you are based on my results. Hope I have been of some help to you on this one....and good hunting! :beers:

You may want to look at the MXT or M6.
the 14khz is very good on coins and gold.
I like the ease of the M6 and it will go as deep as the MXT plus I like the hi tone for coins.

Another detector to look at in that price range is the Minelab Eureka Gold. It has multiple frequencies 6.4kHz, 20kHz, and 60kHz. You will be able to use all three of these frequencies in your area. You won't have the notch capability or the pretty screen of the MXT, M6, or X-terra 70. Some folks don't need or use that anyway. If you will be primarily hunting gold, I would go this route. You can still hunt some coins and jewelry with it on the beach or in the park, but when it comes to nugget shooting, you will have the cat's meow!

I have to agree with Richetts.... the Minelab Eureka Gold is also a "hot" gold machine. I have hunted some tailings piles here in Colorado with it, and it handled the mineralization well, and popped out a couple of small nuggets for me. But when it comes to an all around machine, one that is very hot on small gold, as well as one that does everything else very well.......the Minelab X-Terra-70 is definitely the way to go. :clapping:

Great advice from everyone. Thanks! I'm new to forums and it's proving to be quite helpful. Would anyone recommend the Vaquero? It seems to have received good reviews. This will be my first detector and I kind of want an all around model. I live a few hundred yards away from a couple old mines in the foothills of the Sierra so I still want a good gold nugget hunter as well. My wife says I may need to lower my budget as well. She holds the purse strings!

Thanks

Hello Elmo......the Vacquero is one of the most sensitive detectors on the market. It outshines most other machines for relics and coins, and it's null to threshold recovery time is in milliseconds, making it very-very fast, and less apt to miss a good target close to a bad one. Vacquero is also very sensitive to gold nuggets. It is also one of the lightest, and best balanced detectors on the market. With the lifetime warranty, it's hard to go wrong with this machine.
