NEED A NEW WATER SCOOP

Us the search feature here. This comes up at least every 2 weeks.
Sunspot Stealth seems to be the most common answer.

Quality scoops are expensive. But you get what you pay for. I have been using the same scoop for five years. During the spring, summer and fall I am on the beach at least twice a week. I do not baby the scoop at all. Get a good one and you will not regret the investment. Get a cheap one and you will be purchasing another one in a relatively short time,

A few years back I was going through the same thing, searching for the "perfect, supreme, grand ultimate" digger. Below is a list I compiled of the scoops available at that time that I could find on the market. I did a quick google and got hits on all of them except one company seems to no longer make scoops, instead making other digging tools. If your searching brings up one not mentioned, post it so I can update the list.

I believe I ended up with the T-Rex. I forgot to write down which one it was and the company did not put its name on it that I can tell but looks the same from the pictures. I put a solid hickory shovel handle in it, a tether to tie to my belt, and a short piece of "floaty" (water noodle) so it would float handle up when I dropped it in the drink... most recently I acquired a telescoping, fiberglass, shovel handle that collapses to two feet and the shovel part detaches for compact travel. Still in prototype/construction stage but will post pictures when complete.

I will add that although the T-Rex is an excellent water scoop at the beach, and with the hickory handle, it's stout enough to fend off a hoard of marauding vikings, it is not as effective in the fluffy beach sand as the wire-screen scoops. It required too much extra shaking to get the sand to sift through.

One more vote for the sunspot. Just make sure your EYEs aren't bigger than your arms! If you get the 920, its a BIG scoop and its really heavy when its full of wet sand. Underwater a 920 MAY be a good choice, if you're hunting the shore the 720 is probably a better choice. YMMV.

I am going to get a sunspot but can't decide on whether to get the straight or slanted. Which do you prefer and why? I know it is personal preference but would like some feedback on how it works for you.

has to be slanted! Think about where and how you will use it. In order to put the scoop tip into the sand and push it down to grab the target, a slant shaft is rotated to the straight up position. It's comfortable and natural. If you have a straight shaft you have to lean it way forward which is plain awkward, especially for underwater work.

Without a doubt, get the angled one. I have the straight and wish I had the slanted.
That said, its personal preference. Make a cardboard and broomstick mockup and see what feels best for you.

angled is best.iv had both and you really have to lean the strait one very far forward to get a good bite.but they are both very heavy.i like the RTG way better after 50 years of hunting!.

Stealth 720 or 920 w/ carbon fiber handle. Expensive but the only one you will ever buy again and well worth the investment.

Have you looked at the Nuttall? The customer service is top notch. They even special made a scoop for me that broke down for easier transportation on a motorcycle. I especially like the pointed mouth, especially in hard bottoms.

Hey budster, can you post pictures of your break down scoop? I just modified one to use a breakdown fiberglass shovel handle but really interested in other designs that are available.

Thanks

Give me a couple days, not home at the moment. I ordered one, and they sent me two, second one was free:clap:. It's not one of their production items because the two handles were not interchangeable, but they just cut the handle basically in half, put in an insert, drilled a couple of holes for bolts and that was it.

Spend the money up front for a quality rig (unless you are only going out a couple time a year). A Stealth 720 is certainly a great choice, though there are many other ones that will do the job. The day one realizes you've spent more on a garage full of junk scoops than one really good one is a depressing one. I know first hand.

I agree with Pastor Tom. I have the 720i with CF handle.

iv had both and slanted is a must or you will have to lean way forward to get a good bite with a strait. keep in mind this scoop is very heavy!
