Need a little help.

Hey all,
The other day I started hunting a new historical site. Around the main house used to be wooden fence. The fence was torn down about 1910 - 1915 and replaced with stone walls. As a result, there is literally a carpet of tens of thousands of nails. If I discriminate out the nails, I lose my threshold due to the constant nulling, and the recovery. I do hear targets even with the nulling, but I wonder if I am having a diminished effectiveness of my Exp. II. If I have a clear check box on nails, (neither accept nor reject) the chatter will drive you nuts!!!!. I wound up hunting in iron mask (-12) for the very 1st time instead of using it as a check on a target. I managed 2 wheaties, an 1874 I.Head, and an 1846 large cent. Most of the finds were at 10 -12 inches. If I remember correctly my settings were: Ferrous, Sens. @ 24, Fast-ON ( due to the trash), DEEP - ON, Gain 7, Nothing selected or rejected except I went back & forth rejecting or clear box on nails. I am using the stock coil, and am awaiting arrival of a Sunray X-5.

Thanks!!!!!
Bill

I found these at this depth as the soil is VERY rich and loose (no clay). This itself is unusual for this area in general. The coins were a little further away from the band of nails near the walls. I have owned my Explorer for almost a year, and am striving to reach the "expert level" What I'd like to know is whether its capability is diminished by rejecting the nails and thereby having an almost constant nulling, or am I OK with discriminating the nails. I am also looking for any programming suggestions. As I said, I hunted in iron mask for the 1st time, as it was the only way I could think of to separate the junk from the good stuff as well as maintain a good mental picture of what was happening. Another thought of rejecting "learned" or edited nail was that due to the fact that they are in a variety of bent configurations, I would be rejecting too much or just not gaining any real advantage.

IMHO keep on using iron mask & ferrous sounds. if you set the machine to discriminate out the nails (as you point out) you will be in constant nulling and the sounds of good hits will only come through if you detect so slow you wont want to detect at all. keep on doing what seems to work the best though. good luck!

I don't think I'm on "Fantasy Island". I use a Lesche "Mauler" with about a 12" long blade. I dug large deep plugs, and then used my smaller digger to go deeper to get the coins.

I'm sure you're just kidding about him NOT finding coins at those depths. Two of my friends hunt with the Explorer/Explorer II. They regularly find coins from 6-8 inches and they also recover several at 10-12."
