Need a little help with the SOV GT

Bob (OHIO)

New member
I tried using the sov today and had a nightmare of a time pinpointing.Whats the best/easiest way???Ended up digging some very large holes trying to find the targets. Bob

More info please.........

Was this your first time with the Sov?

Are you aware that it is a motion only detector?

What was in the holes?

HH

Yes,I know its motion.Shotgun hull brass, steel junk, peices of copper sheet/old roofing, rivets, rusty nails, etc.I got this machine about a month ago.I've used it before. Bob

You should not have any problems pinpointing the small stuff.

Bigger stuff don't pinpoint good. That's the first clue that it's large junk.

If you pinpoint in disc mode first (X method) there is less chance that you will pinpoint on the wrong object in trashy areas.

Something that will throw you off is a strong shallow hit that picks up on the side of the coil as a weak hit. This "ghost " will be on the right side of the coil for Minelab and Detech coils. Left side for Sunray. The stronger "real" hit will be on the center line.

Oblong or large iron has a habit of pinpointing at the wrong position. The target starts to move as you dig the hole. These particular kinds of things have a feel to them that you get used to after a while.

I pinpoint by the "X" method most of the time. First in disc, then in all metal.

I agree with what you say, but also will tell you a way I found to pinpoint right on every time once you know it is not a false off iron.
While in pinpoint after you checked it in disc to know it is a target you want to dig. While in pinpoint I will go side to side to get the strongest signal, not front to back, but side to side. Get the strongest signals and stop the coil over it and push it to the ground so it don't move off that spot. Now turn 90 degree and go side to side again and stop when the signal is the loudest, now your target will be right under the very center of the coil. If the signal was iffy in disc it is also a good time to check it to now as the target-is right under the center of the coil, so while still holding the coil still over this target i will switch back to disc and slightly wiggle the coil, if it was iron it will null, but if it was good the signal will stay the same or start climbing. Try it, I think you will like it.

When I go over a target that sounds good, I'll cross it again at a 90degree angle, and then while it crosses over good and at the loudest, slowly swing side to side about 1inch swings, and slowly draw the coil backwards until the signal suddenly goes away. At this point the target (for me of course) is at the very tip of the front of the coil. HH

All I need now is for the rain to stop, and I'll try to give these a try.I usually do pinpointing like Mark outlined,on all my machines.Works real well, for me,,most of the time. Bob

double DD's are a little tricky at first but if you do what the other guys mentioned you pick it up pretty quick to where you wont even need to go into pinpoint mode youll know where the target is.
