Need a little help with my AT Pro

Dancer

Well-known member
Been hunting Gulf Beach' for 3 months with the ATP. Not one problem, every thing fine. Now the last 3 times out after about 1 & a half hrs hunting it starts going NUTS! This is on dry sand or freash or salt water does'nt matter. I change batteries, reground ballance nothing helps. Next morning it's fine for another hr. an a half. It's all over the place. It does this on areas Ive been hunting without any problems what so ever. Unless someone can help- I guess it got to go back to Texas. Good thing I got my GTI 1500 with me for a backup.

I wish I knew something to help you, Dancer. Maybe John or some of the more experienced members can help you figure it out. I know when I tried to use the coil cover on my GTI-2500, I always got a lot of chatter. Even if a little sand was in the coil cover and I haven't even tried the cover on the AT/PRO. Good luck.

Did you try a reset? Hold power button down for five or six seconds until it double beeps. I know nothing about those coils, but I know if they leak they will beep like crazy. So, you might try one day to keep it dry and see if acts up. I assume all the wires are good and attached, batteries good.

I ran into some interference one time next to a street light that was malfunctioning, just flickering and would not light up. So you might try to move to another area and see what happens.

MikeLab Yes I tryed the reset- that won't do it either. Like you I'm thinking theres got to be a leak or something wrong with the coil.

That happened to me the second day I had the detector..I about went nuts! Thought I got a lemon, and I was really frustrated and mad! Luckily I bought it from Bart,(Big Boys Hobbies) and he gently talked me off the ledge!
I took the time to re-wrap the coil cable up the shaft, and made sure I had it ziptied properly, and the connection was proper and tight. Not one problem since! If theres any lightening in the area it will cause my other unit to go nuts just like the Pro did that one day..i think its something really simple, ..does it straighten itself out when you turn it off and on and change the settings? Like dropping the sens a click or two? might even be one of the buttons is pressed and did not release, so press them all again a time or two... I'm pretty sure if my machine was bad, this problem would have showed back up by now...I've hunted with it fully submerged and all since with no problems. Good Luck Dancer, you are a good hunter, and I hope you get it fixed and find something great!

I recall someone had loose cable connections. They unscrewed the cables and let the connections dry out. Then it worked fine. Worth a try.

I was out Sunday and went to one spot it worked fine, left there and went to another spot and it went crazy!!! I went home an changed coil(I have 2 different ones). It worked fine. I called Garrett and they are sending me a new coil. Coil went bad.

Power lines will do that.
Loose cable.
If you have a spare coil, try see it same thing occurs if not then:

If all fails you call garrett ask for new coil.

If

Check the coil for holes or cracks. You might be able to dry it out and reseal it if that is the problem.

I had a similar problem, on the Texas Gulf. Two different problems. First time it was a trashy beach. I went to a rarely used beach no problem, somewhat used beach, some chatter. And heavy used beach with lots of trash, lots of chatter.. #2 the coil connection was loose. Wasn't a problem until I adjusted the shaft and the cable was very loose.

If you have a coil cover on it make sure to clean it out that has been known to cause erratic behavior in detectors before also!

I had mine go nuts once about a year ago. It happened at a place I was detecting quite often and had never experienced this before. If I went in to ground balance mode the detector just squealed its head off as well.
Now there is a camping ground about 100 metres away, and I have no idea what what they were running over there but it sure wreaked havoc on the Pro. Gave up on this site that day and went to another , no problem. I still detect at this site and have never experienced it again . Im picking 2 womens basketball teams must have been drying there hair at the same time
