need a littel help on greyghost phones for the Excal. . .

Hi all,

I bought these Grayghost headphones for the Excal, and the volume was pretty low. Too low to actually use. Anyway, I tried to check teh impedance of the phones, and I can't. Piezo Tweeters are used. I then took off the bulkhead connector, and the wires in there were broken.

There are 3 wires. RED, WHITE, and BLACK.

I get excellent audio with WHT/BLK, but where would the RED go?

If I short any 2 wires together, the audio is to low.

Not sure if I should only use the WHT/BLK and "cap" off the RED.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not a expert on this, but if the white and black work OK for you then I would just cap off the red wire being these are only used on your Excalibur and hard wired in. I wonder if that extra wire is for some detectors that are set up for stereo and when you hook the 2 wire together then they are in parallel circuit instead of a series which changes the impedance.
Not sure that is the reason, but if it works OK with the red wire off I would probably run it that way.

You are using the right wires. The black wire is the common, red is for a low impedance detector and the white wire is for a high impedance detector. Just cap off the red wire and your set. I did mine a few months ago and the work great.

Thanks for the help guys.

I noticed that there is an impedance matching ckt inside the headphones. The stock headphones has it in the end cap. It consists of a capacitor and a resistor. The one in the Grayghost has a mini-transformer. very effective.

I also noticed that using the RED and teh BLK also give good audio, but I used only the WHT and BLK.

The audio is a lot better, and a little higher toned. I like it.

I also like the fit of these headphones when compared to the stock headphones.

It appears that I am set. I will be getting a Sovereign Elite tomorrow in the mail, and I have already started reading what others have to say about it. I will be glad to have a machine that has 'notching' in it.
