I hunted a site today with a DMC IIBa, that is well known and been hunted heavily for almost 35 years.. Pulled out a round ball, pocket knife, and a US Plate. I will not tell you how deep the plate was because you would think I was exaggerating. The plate was deep enought that I was about to give up and kinda got careless with the shovel.. That hurts...Thanks RichardnTn

That's a great find! I'd love to find one but there wasn't much Civil War activity out here in California.

Some friends of mine who dive wrecks out here find brass and bronze artifacts sometimes that are pretty ate up from the minerals and electrolosys. They call it 'sick brass' or 'sick bronze'.

Your buckle looks like it may be suffering the same effect.

What they do with those pieces is put them in a five gallon bucket with fresh water and just let is soak. Every week they pull it out, scrub it good with a stiff bristle, plastic brush then they rinse it off good and put it back in the bucket with a fresh change of water and let it soak for another week.

They say it helps to stir the water every couple days with a stick to circulate the halo of minerals away from the brass.

They repeat the process for four to six weeks. They tell me that brass and bronze will continue to "rot" unless it's treated like this to leach out the salts and other minerals.

Just an idea.

Nice buckle!

Cheers,
Steve
