The item was found in New York on a Island in the Hudson River. I've found a lot of artifacts there , its a know spot and once dug by NYS. This past spring while I was metal detecting a came across this (ring ?) . I dug the target at 6 inches I thought it was going to be Indian Head penny it turned out to be a 22 shell . When I checked the hole and plug again I found it. I got pretty excited because I knew I found something different. Hard to tell what it is made out of . Don't think its bone or a form of Bakelite. Thanks for looking. Dutch

I would actually have to touch that to tell you what it is...hard to tell by picture alone...Will it stick to a magnet, does it look copper or bronze? Is it a crush gasket, and not a ring?

HH,

It's non-metal , very smooth and light weight . It definitely looks worked and to perfectly shaped.

Yep, plastic shower ring.... WT Grants sld them in packs for platic shower curtains.... The Shower curtains had reinforced spots for the ring but you needed a sharp point to pierce the plastic...

How got to your place is a mystery but birds pick things for nests. Crows especially steal things and then discard...

Yea I thought rodent myself. I brought it to the NYSM and the so called experts ruled out bone or tooth . They couldn't say what its made out of with out braking a pice off. Giving the fact that I found it 6inches deep , the location , and the points and trade lead found in this camp site I belive it to be unique.

Hi, I am new to the forum. I stumbled across you guys while looking for info on antique duck decoys. My Girl, Dee and I are "Treasure Hunters" of a slightly different sort. We comb thrift stores, garage sales and auctions. We live in the San Fransisco Bay Area where there are a lot of historical spots for Metal detecting, which I have been thinking of getting into. So when I came across the site, I decided to join. So Hi!
Since I do not yet Have a metal detector, I thought I would debut in this area where I might be able to contribute something .

Anyways, here goes.

the best way to tell if something is bone/ivory vs plastic is to take a sewing needle (held by pliers, forceps, etc.) and heat it with a lighter. Get it hot hot. Find an inconspicuous spot on your artifact and attempt to push the needle in. If it is any kind of resin the needle should go right in. If it is bone or ceramic, the worse you will have is a tiny little burn mark that can usually be rubbed out.

I would tend to agree that it probably is from the era of your other finds if it came from the same strata. However, because it was found in or near an active water way, it may be that it was deposited there with the other items that may have been displaced by flood, excavation or some other event.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Ursus.

Depth can be an indicator of the age but you mentioned it was found in the same plug as a .22 shell which would be late 1800's and later. It looks like a spring that has been broken. The tapered end looks original and the blunt end broken. Did you try the hot needle test to see if it is plastic?
