Nail signals:detecting:

Is it just me or does this happen to you also? Sometimes when I get a high signal off a nail it rings high in two directions causing me to dig only to find it is a nail. This happens on smaller nails or deep nails. Is this normal? I have my Explorer SE Pro set at 26 auto sensitivity and 22 or 23 iron mask. I usually use my 6X8 SEF coil. If there is a way to avoid these false signals I would appreciate knowing how. Thanks in advance.

Bent ones are best at doing that or ones that have lots and lots of rust. It's the nature of the beast but it's usually only a very small percent of nails that repeat like that. A detector with powerful sensitivity is going to false a little.

I have mine set up like yours with the same coil and all and I don't dig any nails. Are you hearing any nulling at the end of the sweep to indicate the higher than 22 ferrous signal? When I get one that does that I usually do not dig. Or, see what numbers you get in pinpoint mode.

Mine is set close to yours and it does happen on occasion to me too. If those high rusty nails cause the curser to bounce along the top past half way to the left then it's iron. If it bounces along the top but stays in the right half then I dig.

My last new Minelab purchase was an SE back years ago. The thing did that on ALL of the deep nails. I struggled with it for a year, Minelab replaced the "guts" for me, but I lost confidence in the machine. I had lots of experience with the S and still owned an XS. When I went back to the XS it was a big releif. Only a bent nail would produce the four-way good tone - or a coin. People swear their SE works like my XS on deep nails, so it may just be some of them. I bought a nice backup XS and even though they are out of production, I think the XS is as good as the Explorer series got. If you have a friend with an XS, compare some of those signals.

I must be loosing it... my post should have said XS and Explorer II rather than S and XS. Not sure where my head was - sorry.
