N/T

I have a Cibola, the only difference between it and the Vaquero is the Cibola doesn't have a ground balance knob (it is factory set ground balanced). If you turn the threshold up all the way it is called "super tuning". It gives the detector a boost, makes it go deeper, but in doing so you won't be able to use the pinpoint button, because when you push it you will hear a very loud sound. I set mine up to just get a slight hum with the pinpoint button pushed in and set my headphones volume to a comfortable level. You can use the "super tune" mode and still be able to pinpoint by just Xing the target without the pinpoint button pushed in. Tesoro's are very good pinpointing detectors.I think that you will enjoy the new Vaquero, I really like my Cibola. Steve.

Q "If the threshold is set just at the point of a steady tone the volume is lower in the headphones."

A. Are you referring to the threshold volume or target signal volume? If you mean the threshold tone volume that is the way it should be, just barely audible. Increasing or reducing the headphone volume within a reasonable useable range should have little effect on what position the threshold knob ends up at when you just begin to hear the tone.

The threshold level setting should not have any affect on the volume of surface targets. The Vaquero is a silent search detector in disc mode, the threshold level only comes into play when using all metal, when pinpointing or when it is desireable to supertune the detector for disc mode use.

Adjust the volume first to a comfortable huntable level so that your ears are not blasted by shallow targets then adjust the threshold. Whether set to just barely audible (to you hearing ability) or supertuned to amplify the deeper signals in disc mode the threshold level setting comes secondary to a proper volume level that protects your hearing.

Everyone has their preference but here is my method of adjusting headphone volume. Toss a coin on the ground and with the headphones turned to minimum, gradually increase the volume until the signal from the coin produces an adequate sound level for your hearing. If you start with a high volume setting and reduce it while swinging over the coin the level you end up with will be much higher than what your ears actually need to hunt effectively. In a couple minutes your ears will adjust to the lower sound level and allow you to hear the fainter targets.
