Diggin, First off we have all seen something good slip from our grasp, I have had chains run Thur the holes in the scoop as I reached to get them. Watched a hoop earing roll Thur the holes. Most rings won't fit Thur the holes in my scoop.I am sure everyone has there own way of digging. I face the waves, so I can see what is coming, I try to did between waves. Once I scoop the target, I keep the bucket of the scoop as straight up as possible, that way anything settling in the sand goes to the bottom of the scoop and not off the front. A good workout for the forearms and wrist. And yes I have lost things and never found them again. In knee deep rough water keep a good hold on the scoop, they will draw blood when they hit your shins. Practice makes perfect, most of the time.HH

I use one in Fresh water lakes. In Fla.the Gulf and Atlantic are full of shells so after about 2 to 3 scoops it won't let the sand Thur.Plus if the waves are very rough it can be more of a hindrance then help.

these tactics work for me
first i have a farmer john wetsuit when its real cold i put on the booties, then the wetsuit bibs, then my neopreme waders, then the wetsuit top. then unless you go over the top of the waders for a prolonged period of time you stay basically dry. you do look goofy
next i use a sifter which is attached with a length of rope.

when ever i can get the scoop to the sifter i dump everything including the scoop in the sifter and let the waves do the work.
if i'm deeper then say chest deep i shake the scoop under water to keep the waves from washing anything away. i hunt the shores of lake michigan waves are normally 1 to 3 ft. i wouldn't go hunting without the sifter. if its to rough to use the sifter then its to rough for me to hunt.
i face the waves so that i can see whats coming in but still get surprised. i dig in the troughs as best i can. when its really rough i try to hunt a beach that has a breakwater i can hide behind. just my 2 cents.
