Mystery signs

Hi guys,

Recently i went to the beach and spent about 20 minutes pondering some really odd signals.I was getting numbers on my explorer and when i dug there was nothing. When i searched again the numbers were there, then they dissapeared.Every time i went back i got a reading not sure what was going on,prior to that all was well so i gave up.Reading the section "chains" i am wondering if that was the reason.I found a chain earlier this year and had a difficult time on that too.Any suggestions welcome.

H.H. Maureen..

Could be chain, could be filigree. Might be planetary alignment - I hear thats out of whack right now! :wiggle:

Yeah thats what you need for sure - a REAL expert!

Howdy,

You don't say if you were in the surf or on dry sand. I'm going to assume you were in the surf. I had the same problem a few times. Since I wasn't deep I reached down with my hands and grabbed a handfull of sand then and ran my hand over the coil. When it registered I slowly cleaned away the sand until I found out that it was small particles of metal (broken iron fragments) that were going right through my scoop. It could also be small pieces of rusty nuts or bolts. If you keep digging for the same sound in the same place over and over and you can't grab it, chances are that may be the problem.

There are two solutions:

1) Get a scoop with smaller holes. This then becomes a problem as sand and water won't go through the sccop as fast. You could also add wire mesh to the back of the scoop ... OR

2) Glue a small magnet in the lower back portion inside your scoop. This way if you find any type iron it will hold to the magnet and not go through your scoop as you lift it.

I hope this helps. Happy Hunting!!!

I have been thinking about this one a bit, and this is a good solution. I also spent more than a few minutes this weekend chasing ghost signals. They were good, repeatable tones and not broken, DISC'd out signals - the Tiger Shark is very good at this. Good is good as a rule, these were just so darn incessant. No matter how much I scooped, I kept getting the signals! That's when it hit me that they were good conductive signals from items small enough to fit through the mesh on my scoop.

I dont know much about the Explorer, but in the end I was shallow enough to do just as you suggested. Handful by handful I searched for and found my quarry:

A shoelace eyelet
A small split-shot fishing sinker

So why bother? Because one of the local hotshots told us that he had lost a diamond earring there last week, and he wanted it back if we found it. Yeah, right.

Hi Guys,

Actually i was in the dry beach sand, didn't find anything at all,i handed it over to my husband we were both bewildered. The signals were very much like the ones i got when i found the chain weeks ago, that appeared and disappeared.in the end the chain was lying in the sand we had dug out before we spotted it.

Thanks for your input H.H. Maureen..

Maureen,
I have had that problem with my Explorer II rechargable battery pack. Sometimes it works great but most of the time it gives me all kinds of false targets. Now I only use the alkaline battery pack. Try both and see if that helps.
