Mystery "Nugget"

First off, it appears to have been hand-worked or melted on top of something man-made so I'm not saying it's a natural nugget. On the one side there appears to be an unnaturally flat area and two perpendicular lines. That being said the rest of the "nugget" looks somewhat natural with a very interesting fine "crystalline" grain structure on some of the surface. ( I wish my camera was better) I was using a whites MXT and it gave a solid 80 VDI, in the dime range. It's about 1-1/4' L. x 5/8" W. x 5/8" thk. approx. It is heavy for it's size. When polished it's a brownish/ grey/green. Mostly brown. It was found about 4" down right beneath an old avocado tree. Any guesses ? Thanks.

Upon second glance, it looks like it may NOT be artificially worked. Not completely sure. Sorry I know the pics leave a lot to be desired. It's definitely not lead and it could be natural. The reading I got put it in the copper/silver range. It's non-magnetic also. Thanks.

Looks like a beer can that was thrown into a camp fire.

It sure does in some respects Dave but it is much heavier than a comparable size piece of aluminum. I guess around an ounce. I'll weigh it today. Thanks.

Just perhaps a meteorite... Key here would be a cross section. Take to someone to verify it.

Lead.

Used in plumbing. The "crystalline"side is likely an impression of the dirt it fell on.. I find random shaped blobs of lead all the time. You will be able to cut into it with a pocket knife and it will be bright and shiney. Where I hunt they used lead to make fishing weights and I think kids picked up the splatter and carried it everywhere.

Thanks everyome. I have gone over my yard several times with different machines and have found several more nuggets similar to this one. I'm certain now that they ARE lead the only question is how long ago they were dropped here. I've found a few other old relics as well and the other day I found what was left of an old large caliber rifle shell. I don't know of any CW sites anywhere near this area ( or in California for that matter ) but I live in the middle of town so whoever left these things did it a long time ago. I will be hunting the other areas of the property when I can. I'll keep you posted.

Most always lead that has been in the ground for a long period of time will have the white scale covering it. You can usually flake it off with your fingernail.

Yes, have found about 6 or 8 pieces and they all have the powdery white scale on them whem they come out of the ground. Thanks.
