Mystery finds... need help to ID!

Found an old tag of some kind near an 1800's cotton mill. Looks like it might be made of aluminum - very light. Nothing engraved on either side, although it looks like the bottom part may have broken off.
Also found the "R" shield in the side yard of an old Methodist church. Any idea what that could be? It's about as thick and heavy as a half-dollar.
Dimes are there to show approximate size. Please let me know your thoughts...
 
I think its a saddle shield. The letter was most likely a way to customize your saddle and identify it as your property. Here are a few like it.
