Mysterious Find

Was hunting at the Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park along the roadway and came upon a target about 8" deep after digging it up I thought is was just a large piece of scrap tin. After shaking off the dirt I realized it was a very old license plate that had been neatly folded in half and buried flat in the ground. Still recognizable were a few of the numbers and the year, 1949! Not that big of a deal but the fact that the area around the marsh was a known gangster hideout during the Capone days and up through the 1950's. I just wonder what history goes along with the buried plate!

I would bet someone either stole the car and ditched the plates or just grabbed another set from another car to throw the law off . Of course either way you wouldn't want the original plates being found .Either that or the state went to a newer plate and someone just folded it and chucked it . Sure gets ya' wondering doesn't it ?

Yes exactly, stolen car, stolen plates...who knows but it does, as you say, makes you wonder. The idea of someone just chucking it doesn't relate to the way I found it. It was about 8" deep, folded in half and buried perfectly flat. At any rate I almost carelessly threw it away until I started thinking about it and wondered what type of history was attached to the plate. The person that buried it felt sure that no one would find it......and for the most part was almost right....fast forward almost 60 years and now just a old rusted license plate!

It didn't sink into my head that it was 8 *' deep ( I've got to start reading a little slower) .I would agree it had been deliberately buried to hide some kind of dirty work .Cool find !!: thumbup:
