Myles Standish SP in Mass off limits?

I was told that a great water hunting spot has been shut down and put off limits, the Myles Standish State Park in South Carver Massachusetts.
I was told the reason for this is, because the Park Ranger bought a metal detector and wants to keep all the ponds and parks to himself.

Has anyone heard this?

and they really told you this as the reason, I would try to get ahold of someone very high up in the State Park system and try to get clarification.

It could just be that the Park Ranger at that specific park decided he didn't want to allow it.

I hunt in the NH parks (in the water) and I contacted someone in State Park Dept. before I ever went the first time to make sure it was allowed. I was told that the beaches were all open to detecting, but anywhere else is off limits - I know some of the specific park rangers feel they can allow or not allow someone to detect as they see fit.

I spent some time on their web site but all I could find was the hours of operation and this...

"A complete list of DCR Rules and Regulations is available at the Contact Station."

How stupid is that?

As long as Massachusetts, under the MGLA's (Massachusetts General Laws) allows hunting in state parks, he cannot due this. I have never heard of this one before. Who did you hear it from? I was there hunting a few months back with Sea Hunter and did not find much but clad.

Park rangers CANNOT due this by law. If any park ranger or manager stops you from hunting where it is perfectly legal, then they are committing a violation. MA civil rights protects MA citizens more than most states constitutions protect thier own citizens. If hunting is not allowed, it would have to be stated unless you were doing something illegal like damaging state property or dredging. . I would report a ranger who pulled this crap on anyone and I recommend you get their badge number. Then,........see you in MA Supreme Judicial Court. Take it all the way...........

One park ranger cannot decide what to allow or not to allow unless previous detectorists made a mess with to many uncovered holes or if they present a nuisance to the public on a beach.. Usually you are allowed after Labor Day.

theres also the campground there.did a ranger come to you and say no detecting?? if not dont belive all the B.S you hear!! go there and ask!! tell them you will remove all trash you find(iron and nails too) AND WILL LEAVE IT LOOKING BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!! YOU MAY BE AMAZED AT THE RESPONSE!! MAKE SURE YOU SHOW YOUR TRASH TO THEM ON THE WAY OUT!! GOOD LUCK!! I HUNT IN MASS THIS ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME!!

I was told this by the owner of the Whites Detecting shop in Watertown. I emailed the Parks Dept and am going to call them today to try to track it down as to what the regs are.

Since I have to take my wife to an EMT course at BC tomorrow I am going to do some land hunting while she is in class and then Sunday hope to hit either Scusett Beach or Horseneck Beach.

It still kills me that I bought a Fisher M-Scope in 1971 took it to the Cape and didn't find anything in the surf and gave up. I imagine how much I could have found starting before most everyone! Virtually every place would have been unsearched. Oh well, water under the bridge.

I am planning to use my AT4 until I can find a good deal on a used surf/water detector.

I called the Rangers Office and they said that as long as you fill in your holes and pickup the trash and don't detect anywhere except the beach and water, it is fine.

I have a feeling that the guy at the Whites Dealer is trying to keep people from going to that productive spot!

look at it this way, if even a few people he tells believe him and don't check up on it like you did, that's a few less people to compete with!!

Less people the better.
I was there a few years ago I was working the 4 foot depth parellel to the shore, there was another hunter following behind me, suddenly he came up, went around me and started working the 4 foot line ahead of me. I followed in his path and within 20 feet came up with a gold wedding band he missed! I let out a whoop so he would know about it.

Notice sub-section f, "Within 25 feet of picnic tables and park pavilions".

Many times even people working in State Agencies don't know the law or just give a convenient answer.
