my x-70 died

Hi all

I was using my machine and it froze on the last ID. I then turned it off and now it won't turn on or it will show all the symbols and then fade. What do I do now? It was purchased Feb. of this year. I am not currently in the country it was bought.

First thing I would do is put in fresh batteries. If that doesn't fix it, I'd contact Minelab and talk with the techs. They will guide you through what needs to be done. JMHO HH Randy

Sometimes the pins that make contact with the batteries on instalation bend a little and don't make good contact. Be carefull not to just drop the batteries in.

John, I once bought a package of 24 batteries and 12 of them were bad. Just for kicks, if they are all out of the same box, try 4 new name brands. Just a thought. R.L.

Unfortunately It's going to be sent to Nevada to be looked at. I am here in the states(NY) visiting family and I was excited about trying my x-70 here. I have only used it in Europe and was looking forward to comparing the machine's performance between the two places. Now I have three weeks in NY and no machine. I am not happy.

Thanks for the replies

John

my 70 did the same thing I stretched the springs in the battery compartment maybe not a factory fix ,but it hasn't given me any trouble since. gary

If you are not careful when loading batteries the springs will become compressed and not have good contact. Also if you lay your detector down for any reason avoid laying it with the battery compartment door up as the weight of the batteries will be bearing weight on the springs. If it is in your vehicle the little bit of bouncing around could put undo pressure on the springs also causing them to be compressed over time. I do know that even being very careful loading new batteries I caused the problem. But was able to fix it by stretching the springs, BE CAREFUL don't pull them out.

Update

My machine was fixed in a day but shipped ground so it took a week. Not bad.
The PC board had to be replaced so fortunately it was under warranty.
If anyone wants a detailed description of what the symptoms were, let me know.

I'd like a little detail.

I had used the x70 earlier in the day before it went bad. I went to a different park a few hours later. At the second park i tried to turn on the machine and it didn't. I thought maybe that I had not pressed hard enough on the power switch. I pressed again and the x70 powered up. I detected for about 10 min. finding a few pennies. After digging another penny I walked and began swinging again. The machine made no sound and I noticed that it continued to read the last ID without changing. Computers freeze up I thought so I powered down the x70 and powered back up. At this time the x70 showed mixed symbols and then they faded. On and off again. This time nothing displayed. I changed the batteries multiple times and I tried a few more times with the power and the blank screen or fading mix of symbols continued.
I emailed Dick at Minelab and he told me to send it to Nevada for service.
I am glad the pc board went bad while it was still under warranty.

Hope this was useful.

John

I am glad they got it fixed for you. I know you are glad it was under warranty. I had to send mine back also. Mine would not turn off/on easy. They replaced the touch pad, and the battery compartment. All done under warranty also, Beale.

My X-70 quit working and when I called Minelab, they said to send in the coil that I was using and the control box. When I took the 10.5" coil off fo the stem, it made a clunk sound when I tipped it from side to side. Minelab replaced the coil, battery holder, and the main board. When I first had a problem, the batterys would only last about 4 hours and would be hot when I took them out. Minelab got it back to me within a week and it works as good as it was when new.:minelab:
