My X-50 broke down today

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
for the 6th time in 3 1/2 yrs.

Today I drove for about 2 hrs to a lake that was drained this spring to checkout the beach area. I get there and turn on the MD'er and I hear a de-do, de-do sound and see the letters CE " coil error ". I turn it on and off a few times, same damn thing. I go back to the truck and change the coil, same damn thing.
I change the batteries, same damn thing. My hunting partner asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that I guess I'm going to be his diggin boy for the day.
Boy was that a whole lot a fun, but I didn't have to dig very much because I think somebody has already hit this place.

I hate to complain about the X-50 because it does a great job at finding the things that I am looking for " old coins". Yesterday I found my 80th silver coin for the year, but I'm getting tired of all of the break downs.

time to get a back up machine for times like this Mark, I am surprised you don't have a back up especially since yours has broken down so many times

You may have a good point G4e. maybe I should upgrade and keep the X-50 for a backup and I don't think that you want to hear what I might upgrade too.

Im not partiall to any brand but dam the whites Dfx or Whites mxt has been giving me the detector feaver again and sure wouldnt mind one:smoke::pulltab::wiggle:

I don't think I could ever own a whites, my hunting partner uses a dfx and he constantly is telling me he wants a minelab after he sees all my finds when we hunt together at the SAME park, school or private yard. And the dfx cost 400-500 more than my x-70
if I ever upgrade it would be an etrac

Seems like you got a proverbial lemon and imagine a backup is in order...I still remember my 1973 plymouth duster that was in the shop constantly. I would send it into Minelab for a complete going over with a long letter explaining fully your problems and hopefully they can remedy the situation. Grass always looks greener on the other neighbors yard but indeed the backups suggested have their plus and minus features and might look into the new X-terra line for a new unit...
Gee I hope you are shutting the unit off before changing different frequency coils as this seems to be a part of your problem...

Right off the bat had a problem with it shutting down, they replaced it and have never had another problem. It's an excellent machine. HH

would, and did, go back with the MXT. Yes, the X-Terra 70 is a good detector, but side-by-side the MXT outperformed the X-Terra time after time. Similar coils, same sites.

I didn't have the breakdown issues some have reported with the X-Terra series. In that respect, they have been fine.

For me, the DFX doesn't work as well as the XLT, and not as well as the MXT or M6 for most coin hunting applications. The Spectra V3 works better than the DFX, to be sure, but not with the stock coil.

Hi Monte. I hunt with a guy that uses a XLT and I think that the XLT and the X-50 are about equal. The only thing that I see that the XLT is better at is pinpointing. We like to checkout each others signals sometimes and we never PP in the same spot. He's always dead on and I'm usually about a 1" or 2" off, but I do use a 10.5 DD 7.5 coil and sometimes they are not dead on the PP. Over all I think that we are equal.

I like his MD'er and he's not too happy about mine right now, LOL

if an MXT was outperforming an x-70, someone was not using or did not know HOW to use the x-70
I owned an MXT and it cannot touch the x-70
I'd say the x-70 was bad, had a problem, or user error.

G4e, How long did you own the MXT? What 2 - 3 weeks. Just before that you thought the Ace 250 was the next best thing to sliced bread and could compeat with any mid level MD'er. I just don't think you owned the MXT long enough too know if it could compeat with the X-70.

Wheres my diggin boy?? LOL This nice rain would make for some nice beepin if somebody had a machine that worked!!! LOLOLOLOL

well i think the mxt and xterras are both good machines Im sure they both have there pros and cons. The 2 or 3 coil klhz option is pretty nice on the xterras. They are also great on battery life and easy to use very user friendly. I own the 305 wich i like very much and also a Quattro wich is a pretty fun machine as well. Never used the Mxt but sure wouldnt mind. Detectors are like a box of chocolates until you grab one and try it you dont now if its any good.:minelab::pulltab::detecting:

I would not trade my X-Terra 705 (5 x 10 18 khz coil) for two White's DFX, MXT, XLT or whatever.
True, I have only had it a few weeks but on the sandy beach they either preform or they do not ... it dont take long to weed em' out.
The ONLY White's detector that I like for beach use is the BeachHunter ID.

Coin hunting in the park or school yard is most likely another story ... I cant say cause I dont do enough of that to have much of an opinion.

well I know this Mark, my hunting partner has a DFX and I know for a fact my x-70 competes head to head with his machine, everytime we hunt I find more than him on the same site
The MXT was a chatter box I could not stand all the chirps and beeps, it was nuts, The x-70 is SMOOTH
